EAST COAST STOCK.

POVERTY BAY OUTPUT.

EXPORTS TO OTHER DISTRICTS.

Poverty Bay and the East Coast a£ a wealthy sheep and cattle-raising district caii be judged from the number of stock that were either sent out of the district or put through the works, in the, 1925-26 season. Approximately 700,000' sheep and lambs a.nd 41,000 cattle were accounted for through these channels during the season, The. works accounted for approximately 578,000 sheep and lambs, and 23,000 cattle. Additional yards a;ttr.acted dealers and buyers to the extent of well over 100,000. Figures that are piost surprising (says the Gisborne Times) are those indicating the cattle sent to the Bay of Plenty and Waikato districts during the season. Those parts ha,ve always proved a certain market foi Poverty Bay cattle breeders, ■ but never before to the extent of this season. During the year 18,028 cattle passe,d over the Motu ranges on the way to northern pasture's. These cattle went to buyers in Opbtiki, Wha,katane, Te Puke, Waikato, or even as far up as Auckland. Eighty per cent, off them were steers from two to four years, and one line of 20$ weanei steers went to a Hamilton buyer. Female cattle were not in great demand. The numbers of cattle north must constitute practically a record for a sgason, .and can only be accounted for by the fact that many farmers, owing to the dry season, were compelled to dispose of the bulk and in some cases practically the whole of. their herds.

In addition to the figures given above a. number of sheep were sent to the Bay of Plenty, and both sheep and cattle were sent to the Wairoa and Hawke’s Bay districts. The stock driven south, however, this year were not as numerous as in many previous years.
