PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.
ROUTINE BUSINESS;
The monthly meeting off the. Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the following: Crs. E. Edwards, E. A, Porritt, J, W, Silcock, H. J. Hare, J. Pinder, G, P. de Castro, P. E. Breiian, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). DEDICATION OF STREET.
The borough solicitor wrote in connection with the dedication of the southern end of Towers Street, and advised that the only practicable method of completing the matter was to have the extra piece dedicated as . a public road and then closed and transferred by the borough to Mr PVlahovich. The least expensive method of having the portion closed was -under section 12 (7) of the Land Act, 1924. An instrument of dedication was enclosed with a view to having the dedication accepted. With, reference to the closing of a portion of the street and transferring it to Vlahovich, an undertaking was given that the council would be put to nd expense in the matter. The Mayor said that the actual disbursements would be about £l5, and even then the solicitor would be out of pocket to the extent of several pounds sterling. It was resolved to affix the seal in the terms of the letter. It was agreed that the solicitor should not be out of pocket over the transaction, and the matter of costs was referred to the Finance Committee. , BULK STORAGE DEPOT. A Wellington oil company, which contemplates, erecting a bulk storage depot at Paeroa forwarded a copy elf an agreement for the laying of pipes. The agreement was approved for a term of 21 years at an annual rental of £lO. A second oil company advised that the Inspector of Explosives had approved of the site at Paeroa for the erection of a petrol bulk station, and - forwarded plans showing the proposed lay-out of the buildings and asked for the council’s approval. The Mayor s,aid that the lay-out appeared to be quite satisfactory. The plans were approved. ERECTION OF BULK STATIONSThe Chief Inspector of Explosives forwarded copies of letters sent to all oil companies giving detailed instructions for the installation of underground petrol tanks,, and requested that thq council should ensure that the installations were correctly carried out. RAILWAY SETTLEMENT. Mr A. M. Samuel, M,P„ forwarded the following letter received from the Prime Minister in respect to the offer made by the council regarding the railway settlement at Paeroa :— ‘With 'reference to the Paercia Borough Council’s offer to undertake the metalling of Ainsley Road in the Railway Settlement providing the department supplies the metal required, I have to inform you that the department will be pleased to .accept the council’s offer. The department’s chief engineer will communicate with the council and arrange the details.” CRITERION BRIDGE. The assistant Under-Secretary., Public Works Department, forwarded copies, of a warrant authorising the council to construct a, bridge over the Ohinemuri River at Paeroa on the main Paeroa-Te Aroha road. In regard to a loan of £l7OO which the council desired to raise, it was pointed out that power was given by virtue of the provisions section 4 of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1913, to include the first year’s interest in the amount of the loan, raided. It was resolved to approve of the agreement, and that the matter of the raising of the loan be referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. In reply to Cr. Silcock the Mayor said he understood that the erection df the bridge would be commenced almost immediately. . MILLER AVENUE PATH. A resident of Miller Avenue wrote drawing attention to the need of forming an approach to her residence and asking that metal be supplied for the purpose.—Request agreed to. SHOOTING GALLERY. Mr T. D. Davies applied for a permit to run a shooting gallery on Mr Ellis’ property in Belmont Road. The application was granted, sub- - je.ct to compliance with the requirements; of the Building Committee, and that all precautions be taken to ensure absolute safety to the public. EXTRA CONSTABLE. The Inspector of Police, Hamilton, wrote with reference to the .stationing of an extra constable at Paeroa, and advised that careful inquiries had been made into the position and the matter referred to the Commissidner of Police, who had decided that the time had not yet arrived when an increase ot staff at Paeroa would be justified.—Received. HOSPITAL LEVY. The Thames Hospital Board forwarded an amended statement of receipts a.nd expenditure for the. year ending March 31, 1927, and advised that the levy had been amended trom .409 of a penny in the £ to .340 of a penny. The levy required from the borough would be £524 0s 8d on the rateable capital value of £369,870. ISSUE OF DEBENTURES. The Controller and Auditor-General wrote with reference to the terms of his certificates to the borough bal-ance-sheets for the years March 3L 1935-26, in connection with the issue of debentures below par and the crediting to loan account off interest on fixed deposit and asked what steps the council proposed to take to adjust the matter. The Mayor said that a slightly higher rate of interest had been paid above the amount authorised. The matter was referred to the Mayor and chairman of the Finance Committee, with power to act.
