HINDOO IN TROUBLE.
ASSAULT CHARGE PROVED.
A MONTH WITH HARD LABOUR. At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs G. P. Lamb and B. Gwilliam, J’s.P., a, middle-aged Hindoo named Sham Singh, alias Sam Singh, alias James Jackson, was chaiged that on Monday he did assault L.. E* Cassrels, proprietor of the CriteriioD Hotel, Pa,eroa, by throwing a bottle at him. A second charge was also preferred Of using obscene language. Accused pleaded not guilty. Outlining the circumstances, Constable McQJinchy said that Singh, when arrested, had been drinking through the day. It appeared that a.ccused asked Mr Cassrels for accommodation, and was toldFthat the hotel was fuhy occupied' Accused appeared to resent being refused board and lodging, but left the hotel and walked up .the street. Later he returned to the hotel and renewed his request for' accommodation. Mr Cassrels again refused, and ordered him outside. Accused went, and Mr Cassrels accompanied him to the edge of the footpath. At this juncture Singh used filthy language to Mr Cassrels, and pulling a bottle ofc beer out of his pocket he threw it at Mr Cassrels, narrowly missing him. In mitigation, Singh stated that as he had been refused board and lodging by Mr Cassrels he wa,s not going to drink his beer. / bottle ot beer was merely tossed away, and was not thrown at the proprietor. A witness gave evidence of seeing the assault and hearing the language ■used.
Constable McClinchy intimated that accused had come in from Kerepeehi that morning. There were ten previous convictions against him. The. Bench took a. serious view of the case, and stated that cases fot obscene language must be put a stop tb, and any' that came, before the Court would be severely dealt with. On the assault charge accused was convicted and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with ha,rd labour in Mt. Eden Gaol. On the- charge of using obscene language accused was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour, the terms to nun concurrently.
On a. charge of using obscene language, in the main street at Te Aroha on May 23 last accused appeared at ? Te Aroha yestet day and was sentenced to one month’s hard labour.
