WORKOF THE MONTH. REPORTS SUBMITTED. . At last Thursday’s meeting of , the Hauraki Plains County Council the following reports were submitted by the engineer (Mr F. Basham) 'a,nd the inspector (Mr R. H. Cameron) respectively :— ENGINEER’S REPORT. “Netnerton Ferry.—The Wharepoa ferry was. removed to Netherton on the advertised date, and is now 'Running satisfactorily. The approaches and fences to holding paddocks, etc., ha,ve been repaired, but the house requires considerable attention to make it ; fit for habitation. This is a matter for the Works Committee. “Pipiroa Ferry.—The ferry should be working to-day. I will present a return' of expenditure .at the.; next

meeting. , , “The : expenditure on Wilson’s Road to date is £4032 18s 7d, which includes the total cost of work with the exception of a small amount owing to the Paeroa Borough Council for roller hire .and the:cost of' competing the backing up of metal, say, £5O. The amount of. the estimate was £4627. Had it been possible to haive completed this - work in fin© weather it would have meant a Saving of at le,ast £350. ’ ' ' “Netherton Loan, 1925.—1 propose palling tenders fjor the next meeting for all carting in connection with the coming season’s work. ‘■Bitumen.—lt would be advisable fo order the bitumen necessary, for top-dressing Piako and Orongo roads in time to allow l ' early delivery. I have , ma.de arrangements for landing the necessary sand.”

The engineer' was instructed to order bitumen for delivery in December and January.,

‘‘General.—Maintenance arid repairs to roads in the Horahia,, Kerepeehi, and Ngatea ridings sijre tyejing vigorQusly carried out. Other roads will receive attention a,t an early date. “Waitakaruru Stream Bridge.—ln company with Mr de Malmanche, of

the Public -Works Department, I inspected this bridge-and agreed with his suggestion that it should be replaced with a new one. as soon as •possible. The type suggested is concrete piles, steel girders, and hardwood decking and handrails. In the meantime running planks on the .old bridge would help it out until the new bridge is v completed.” ‘

Miller, the council’s representative on the District Highways Council, reported that the' chairman had forwarded the council’s, request on to the Public Works Department, as in his opinion the department could do more than" the Highways- Board. The Highways Council would give an application for a free grant a flat refusal, as 1 it‘ had only £89,000 to meet requirements totalling £140,000. An application for a £'for £ subsidy received favourable consideration.

In reply to: Cr. Hicks the chairman Said, that.,the council’s share would fall on the riding or on the' county reading scheme.
