TRAIN SMOKE NUISANCE.

PLIGHT OF PUKE RESIDENT.

MINISTER TO BE APPROACHED.

At the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday night Mr W. H. Taylor drew attention to the hardships being suffered by Mr ajid Mrs Miller, of Hill Street, Puke, by the encroachment of -the railway works and overhead bridge on to their property. The Millers had endeavoured to get the Railway Department to take the property over, and Mr Samuel, M.P., was also interesting himselY in the matter. It was really a ca,se of hardship, ajnd the speaker thought that the chamber might very well bring the matter before the Minister and ask for relief.

The president (Mr P. Williiams) said that the member for the district had the matter in hand, and had given an undertaking to do all he could to get some relief. A Water tank had .been erected near the house, a.nd the inmates suffered considerably from engine smoke and smuts.

In reply to the president Mr Taylor said that the department had never made an offer to take over the property.

Mr H. J. Hare said that it was only a matter of time when the, department would have to ta,ke over the properties owned by Roberts, Miller, and Goldsworthy. It was desirable that some steps should be, taken to at least minimise the nuisance.

Mr P. E. Brenan said that in the early stages of the railway works at the Puke the department had wanted to take over the block mentioned, but there had been strong opposition from a, certain party. The properties were now deteriorating. He had great consideration for Mr and Mrs Miller, and in view of their advanced years and financial position he thought that it would be well within the province of the chamber to place the facts before the member with a request that he should take the matter up with the Minister as early a,s possible. The suggestion was adopted.
