THE QUEEN CARNIVAL.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The action of the Paeroa Borough Council in refusing to grant further permits to the Queen Carnival committee after June 30 is to be commended. No one is prepared to argue that the local boy scouts committee has not a desirable object in view, a,nd that if a, boys’ brass band can be formed and maintained it vVill be a decided acquisition to the town ; but it is contended that the undertaking at the present, time, and for so large an amount, is not warranted. Since the formation of the local scouts troop two public appeals ha,ve already been made foi- assistance, and these were liberally supported. It is right to remember that there, are other organisations which have a claim on the public, and every organisation requires to be kept in its proper perspective. A part of a scout’s education is to learn self dependance and gain the ability to assist-others. The public of Paeroa has never been found lacking when assistance is required for a worthy object, but it is undesirable that small children should enter into the undertaking a,nd solicit money from the public. There is a limit to the spending power of the people, and to prolong the carnivaj will very largely defeat, the object. Other appeals, notably the children's park at the old railway station site and a war memorial, are still pending, If our town is to hold its rightful place these undertakings will ha,ve to be proceeded with, a.nd the question is, where is it all going to end ? It has been contended, and 'rightly so, that the queen carnival does not justify the object for which it is being held. As stated before, a brass band would be ah acquisition, but. that does not preclude the fact that there are other and more worthy objects which require attention and assistance. WELFARE.
