POPULARITY INCREASING.

USE IN SOUTH ISLAND.

The use of the self-propelled rail vehicle on the railways seems to be increasing. The chassis of the new type of electric railway carriage which is to run on the Christchur'chLytellton line has how been shipped from the workshops at Petone to Lyttelton, and the body, which was built in Christchurch, is being fitted at the; present time. It is expected that the machine, the first of its. type to be tried in the. Dominion, will, be on the road shortly. A rail motor which has been commissioned for use on the Glenhain bra.nch (Invercargill) between Edendale and Wyndham, commenced running on Monday, and is reported to be giving satisfaction. On this particular branch a, steam service is working the passenger and goods traffic in the morning, while the rail motor is to convey passengers during the remainder of the day. Another motor of the same type is to be employed on the Switzers branch between Switzers and Riverdale, a stretch of 14 miles. The car, which is to commence" running on Monday next, is expected to do the trip in 40 minutes, including five intermediate stops. The train a ; t present on the run takes >55 minutes, including shunting at wayside stations. It is intended that the rail motor will take the place, df the mixed train, atnd a separate goods train is to be provided to work goods traffic.
