STATE COAL MINES.

THE MEN’S DEMANDS. SUBMITTED TO MINISTER. WELLINGTON, June 7. The demands of the State coal miners, which have been submitted to the Minister of Mines for final decision, include a request for all statutory holidays, also May Day and the interval between Christmas and New Year on full pay, making a total of 17 days annually. Miners are working eleven days fortnightly at West Coast mines, excepting the State mine, which works ten days fortnightly, and .the. department desires the general practice to be adopted, as its output is being prejudiced. The State miners’ refusal to work on Saturdays also causes inconvenience and loss in working shipping a,t Greymouth, and it is proposed by the Department that Saturday work be resumed. The recent mining 'agreement made on the West Coast was followed by an offer of a higher hewing rate for one of the State mines, but the State miners require another Is per ton above the special rate offered, which the department is not able to concede.
