DISTRICT NEWS.
o NGATEA. CHILDREN’S BALL. The evening of Wednesday last will linger long in the minds of the chilr dren attending the Ngatea District High School, for it was then that the first children’s fancy dress ball for many years was held in the Ngatea Hall. The function yvlas arranged by a, member of .the teaching staff to raise funds for the provision of hockey sticks a,nd other sports requisites for the school. This teacher also trained the children in dancing. As is usual with children’s functions the attendance was very large, the hall being taxed to its utmost, and for many seating accommodation could not be provided. A pretty decorative scheme was used, and good music was supplied by Henderson’s Orchestra. Mr J. Neate. was M.C. Practically all the children were in fancy dregs, and they, took full, opportunity of the many dances called for their benefit alone. The prizes for costumes were awarded as follows :—
Best girl, K. Bai’ribal, sun; best boy, B. Burke, page ; best couple, O. Clarke and M. Burke, as bride and bridegroom. Special prizes : J. Rowlands, grandma ; T. Cleaver, minister; D. Ingram, fairy ; Monte Carlo dance, J. Shaw 1 and U. Birkenhead.
The; winners in the adult competition were : Best lady, Miss E. Wheeler, Oriental dancer; best man, Mr H. Harper. Owing to the dense crowd it was impossible to record all the fancy dresses.
