PLAINS FERRIES
DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL. WHAREPOA DIFFICULTY. The three ferried tn the county of Hauraki Plains were .the subject of some discussion at Wednesday’s meeting of the Coiiinty Council. Cr. Miller said that he ha,d discussed the position in regard to the Wharepoa ferry with the chairman of the Thames County. He had informed Mr Lowe that the Plains Council desired to have no more to do with it, and that the council would hand over .ajl its* assets in the plant for tlie Thames County to maintain the service if that county would maintain the approach road on the Plains side ’to the Turua-Netherton road. -
Cr. Walton reajd .the letter to the Thames County conveying the decision of the past council that the ferry had outlived its usefulness, and that from June 13 it would cease to contribute towards the»upkeep of the ferry. To test the feeling of the new council Cr. Walton moved, and Cr. Madgwick seconded, that, the decision of the previous council; be adhered to.
The motion was carried unanimously, and the ferry committee and Crs. Walton and Madgwick were deputed to confer with the Thames County. Council and report. • NETHERTON FERRY.
Cr. Reid asked the position in regard to the Netherton—ferry. The settlers desired the service reopened as quickly* as possible. It was pointed out 1 that nothing could.be done until* a decision was arrived at in regard to the disposal of the Wharepoa ferry pontoon. If the pontoon was not required for Wharepoa it could be shifted, .but if the Thames County kept the Wharepoa ferry open there was the question Jf whether a' second ferry was necessary. x PIPIROA FERRY. In reply to Cr. Parfitt the engineer said that the approaches to the Pipiroa ferry were practically completed, but the opening of the ferry was hung up by the lack of machinery for hauling,'and this, depended on what became of. the Wharepoa terry machinery. If this was available the ferry could be'* opened in a few days, but if new machinery had to be purchased the delay would be longer. In view*.of the probable decision at the next meeting the matter was deferred.
