PEDIGREE JERSEYS.
TIROHIA DISPERSAL SALE. MR. B. E. VEALE’S HERD. With the exception of the yearling stock ,the whole of Mr B. E. Veale a aristocratic pedigree Jersey cattle herd was sold by public auction at the homestead, Tirohia, yesterday. Buyers were present from the Waikato, Thame." Valley, Gol Ifields, and Hauraki Plains. . Unfortunately, steady rain prevailed throughout, and as a consequence the stock did not have the contented appearance to the sale ring tha.t they would have had if the day had been warm and sunny.
Unquestionably blood and butterfat backing was paramount in every animal offered, but apparently there was not the money available to permit of high-priced pedigree cattle being purchased. Of the 43 lots submitted by auction 37 changed hands, and .the district will be the richer by the extension of Violona’s K.C. blood in various parts of the area. The female stock, totalling 35 head, brought an average price of 27 guineas. The highest price,’ 65 guineas, wa<s paid by Mr A. Hazelton, of Waihoii, for the 5-year-old cow Tirohia Briar Leaf, by Cambridge Lancaster’s Renown, the dam being Cambridge Sweet Briar. Mr P. A. Swney, Waihou, paid 42 guineas, 'for the cow Tirohia Superior, by the same sire, the dam being Cambridge Ne Plus Ultra, while Mr A. Q. Smith, Otdrohajiga, paid a similar price for a cow, Tirohia Silver Spray, by the same sire, the dam in this case being Silver Leaf. The herd sire, Violona’s K.C., was not sold, b ing passed in at 25 guineas.
