PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETINC OF HOUSEHOLDERS; REPORT OF COMMITTEE. The annual meeting of household's and the election of nine meuilie for the. Paeroa District High School Committee was held at the Soldiers’ Club on Monday night, Mr C. H. Pascoe presiding over a sparse attendance. ANNUUAL REPORT. Included in the report wap the following :— “Further progress) has been made, in the history of .the school, and in the past year a fresh record was established by thq excellent results attained by the pupils at the examinations’held in December. last. “Examinations.— Twenty-two pupils .completed their first year a,t high school, 13 their second year, 9 their third year, and 2 their fourth year. There were eight entrants foi the. matriculation examination, three of whom obtained partial; passes, two completed the full matriculation examination, and three, failed. There were three entries for .the Senior National Scholarship, two gaining the 'scholarship and one a senior free place. In the Public Service examination there were eleven entrants, seven of whom, passed and four failed. In the Senior Free Piece examination here were 13 candidates, .ten of whom were granted free places and three’failed. For the teacher’s D examination there were two candidates; one of whom obtained a partial pass in two groups, and one a partial pass in one group.. For the Junior Na r t ion al Scholarship rtherei were six candidates, five of whom obtained free places and one failed. In Standard VI--22 pupild gained proficiency certificates and two competency certificates. It is worthy of note that Paeroa is the . only district high school to have obtained two Senior National scholarships last year. r Hearty congratulations are due to the teaching- staff and-the pupils on the splendid results attained. < “School Staff.—ln August Miss M. Shaw retired from .the teaching staff after nearly 32 years’ continuous service as infa-nt mistress. Your Committee co-operated with the teaching staff and pupils in recognising her long and faithful serviced Miss. K. O'Grady succeeded Miss Shaw 1 in the. infant department At the close of the year Miss E. G. B. Whitton resigned, and Misses H. Shand, and V. Nathan have been appointed to the staff. “Attendance.—The average attendance. for the year 1925 was: Primaly, 342 ; secondary,, 47. There are.' at present 390 primary and 47 secondary children attending the school. These, numbers a.re a slight increase .on last year for the primary department.’’ In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the Mayor ' (Mr W. Marshall) paid a glowing tribute to Mr Taylor and his sta.ff.. He also' congratulated the. out-going committee on the splendid work done, throughout the year. While deploring the lack of interest shown by householders in- school affairs, Mi Marshall sa.id it was- evident that parents, realised matters were being capably handletd,. and that. the results were highly sjatisfactory. He hoped that the coming yea.r would be as equally successful. . In his opinion it could hardly be more successful, as the school had reached- ,a vejry high pinnacle' of efficiency. Mr W. Barclay seconded the resolution, and in doing so added his quota of praise to the .teachfers and committee. He said that he did not think the committee should feel, discouraged at the small a,tten dance at the meeting. It could be taken as a tribute of satisfaction at the state of , affairs. Had householders not felt, satisfied with the-operations of the committee a bigger gathering would have attended. - MONEY FOR IMPROVEMENTS.
On the motion of Mr J. McDonald 1 , it was ‘resolved : “That th hi moetiTig authorises, the expenditure of the £Bl and interest for fencing the new playing area, and for such other items •.the committee think fit.” . appreciation. On th emotion of the lifayor it was ■ resolved 'that the meeting record its appreciation of the wk and enthusiasm of the out-going committee, and especially the good services rendered by Mr N. C, Busby, who had been an energetic committeeman over a long term of yearis, but who did not. seek re-election. . The resolution was carried with acclamation. In acknowledging .the resolution the chairman said that he believed 1 it. ■ was almost impossible to get a better headmaster, than Mr Taylor, and . it was well for parents and pupils to recognise that fact.' The committee had done its best through the year, and much of the credit was, due to Mr Taylor, who attended the meetings: regularly and was always willr ing .to offer suggestions for the betterment of tire, school and the weh fare of the pupils. The assistance b and co-operation of Mr Taylor had ma,de the 'duties of the committee a pleasure. ■» The chairman said that he wished to offer his personal thanks to Mr Marshall and the Borough Council for considerable help given during L—the year, and also to the members of the old committee. Mr G. ,H. Taylor- (headmaster) acknowledged the eulogistic references accorded the. staff a,nd himself. The teachers were young and energetic, and were eyer ready to do what was possible for the betterment of the school and the success of the. pupils, ' It ha.d been a real pleasure to be associated with such a. splendid committee, a,nd' he was. appreciative and grateful for what had'been dome, and trusted the present happy state of affairs would long continue. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE. There being only nine nominations received there was) no necessity for a ballot, and Messrs W. H. Bla.keway, C. T. Mettam, J. C. H. McDonald, C. Pascoe, W. T. Power, W. Purdie, I,J. W. Silcock, Walter Smith, and R» i E. Thorp were declared duly elected.
GENERAL MEETING.
At the genera] meeting which followed Mr Pascoe w,as re-elected chairman and Mr Power deputychairman. The chairman appropriately welcomed the new members and l expressed' the hope that they would find the work interesting. Mr Smith suitably acknowledged the welcome on behalf of the ne.w members. Messrs McDonald or Blakeway were authorised to sign cheques with the secretary. MEETING PLACE. It was resolved that meetings be ■held on the second Saturday in each month.
It was also clecidejd to record thanks and appreciation to the. Paerpa Borough Council, for the use of its chambers free ais; a meeting place, and to make application for a. continuance of the privilege, when tire new chambers were, occupied'. It was decided' to purchase a lawnmower for use on ,the school plots. Messrs Smith and Blakeway were appointed a visiting committee until the next meeting. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman, who was congratulated. on the good work he, had performed and on his re-election. TIROHIA. The fololwing were elected' to the Tirohia School Committee: Messrs B. E. Veale (chairman), H. P. Gillard', C. Tilsley, G. Wilkinson, S. Mcßirnie (secretary).
