It. was decided to have the work commenced. AMALGAMATION. Mr L. B. Campbell, Public Works Departmejit district qngi:neer, Auckland; advised that he had been appointed a to inquire into the amalgamation of the Horahia. and Hauraki drainage boards. He would like to have the inquiry finished during'May, and would be glad to know what dates would ,be suitable..—Received. ;
REMOVAL. OF CULVERT. Mr P. G. Pearce, Pekapeka Road, wrote complaining qf the blocking of his outlet- by the action of the County Council in taking up a. culvert and filling in the drain across Pekapeka Road. , , 'Mr .Heappey said the position was that the property had an outlet to the MonganUi No. 1 drain, to which there was a fall of five. feet. The distance to the river was' 165 cha.ins, whereas it was about, rive miles by the route desired by The settler, and the drains were' not cleaned-by. the board, as that would permit, water to flow bn to the land.' The clerk, was instructed to reply accordingly. . ■ REQUEST FOR: OUTLET. A deputation comprising Messrs W. M. Barton, G. Fisher, and F. Chick, settlers of Pekapeka Road,- waited upon the board and' presented a. petition signed by themselves, and Mr J. P Handley, asking that, a Special; rating area be constituted for the purpose of'raising, a loan for the construction of a drain between their properties to the Mangonui No. 1’ drain.
Mr Heappey mentioned tha.t some time ago he had suggested having the drain made. A certain landowner had objected, and he had then suggested that a special rating .area be constituted sh that all those: who would receive benefit would be included. The work wns estimated to cost about £l5O. It wass a. pity that it was necessary to go into the matter formally to bring this one man into liner Five settlers desired the drain and one settler whose land would be traversed declined to contribute. To raise a. special loan would mean that over £25 would be required for formal advertising alone, and the work would be delayed for almost six monthjs. The master was discussed at length, and finally it was, agreed that' a big effort be made to induce the one settler to join in with the others and make some contribution, so that the work could be financed by the six settlers assisted to the extent of £3O by the board.
To provide for the maintenance t.hq classification of the land benefited would be raided.
