West 3. ■x Good wea,ther conditions prevailed and there was a large attendance; at the Paeroa Domain on Satui day afternoon. The principal attraction was the senior match East v. West. Both ■ teams, had plenty of supporters in the crowd, and the barracking and applause • from the two sections was very marked. Judging from the comments, heard .the chances of the West team defeating its, rival team appeared to be most fancied. . However, the .teams were, evenly matched, and although, .the exhibition could. scarcely . be called high-class Rugby, the game was fast, and for the most part fairly open. During the first half neither . team scored, but on resuming after-half-time an exciting struggle ensued and Wes,t won .the match by three points. Following .were the teams: — West.—M. Poland, J. In a scrum inside West’s twejnty-ftve East secured, but Verran stopped .the rush * by sending out near half-way. From the ljne-out a scrum-was ordered, and F. Thorp'returned to the line. The nr line-out enabled Hardman to pick up and'pass to Taylor, 'who failed with a drop-kick, East forcing. Play hung in neutral territory'for awhile, until a breach gave Swann a chance .to carry play to the twenty-five line, the ■ ball eventually going out. From the throw-in West ■ attacked and .carried into the opposing team’s twenty-five, where E. Moore stopped the' rush by finding the line. For an infringement by Wells East gained a Penalty and Mead cleared to the line. From the -line-out H. Moore carried to the other- end of the field, Verran clear- - ing. . After the change-over Taylor took a ma.rk from a line-out in East’s territory, but his kick failed- In.a loose Inrush East gained, a free kick. Hardman cleared. Offside play by Jenyns gaye E. Moore a chance .to score; but | his kick failed. Dawspn. kicked too * hard in a loose rush and Ea.st forced. East took a turn at attacking, but a breach occurred and Taylor cleared to neutral territory. \ On resuming after half-time East ha.d a busy time, defending. A scrum ensued on the. line, but West suffered a penalty and E. Moorq cleared. In a loose. rush immediately afterwards (Hardman' scored. Taylor’s kick hit the'post. West 3, East 0. In a. forward rush Nield secured but was penalised, for holding on. E. Moore failed to convert and Nield returned to midfield,- where in a loose rush Dawson -gained possession and passed' ■ , to H. Shaw, who scored near the corner: Swann converted. West 8, East 0. In the final quarter matters livened up considerably,i and in aj strong attack East carried down for Radford to score near the corner. E. Moore ““'.failed to convert. Wqst 8, East 3. From the drop-out. East again attacked, but. a breach brought relief to the defenders. A forward rush headed by Dayzspn, carried to the - line, Hume sending out at the; corner. From the line-out Swami secured and passed to Verran, who was penalised. H. Moore headed a rush down'the field, and when he lost the ball F Thorp gained 1 control and scored a good try. E. East was ' much the heavier team, and should have made a far bet,tejr showing, but many of the playerh did- not seem to be able to keep , their correct positions,. and as a consequence the opposing team was given many chances to score. The East backs were weak, lapked ; combination, and failed to work"the forwards sufficiently. The Wes,t backs played well together, arid to them the success Of the .match was largely due. In the second quarter-Beattie picked up and scored, but; Goonan failed to convert. East 3, West 0. Following even play West started a forward rush, and when about .the; half-way Hine J.
