THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE HAURAKI PLAINS GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 1926. DAY OF REMEMBRANCE.

Eleven years will haye passed on Sunday since the gallant Australia<n and New Zealand soldiers thrilled the whole world by their magnificent feats of. valpur at Gallipoli. The hand of time has wiped out much of the. glamour and romance of war that appealed to us ajl through the long years of anguish. Many chapters of .that awful time are gradually being forgotten-—in the ordinary course of things being looked upon by many a» little more; than events of past history—but this memorable landing of the Anzacs on April 25, 1915, is an epoch that will never be forgotten by Britishers the world over, and here in New Zealand in particular. As an example of military valour, of the. achieving of the seemingly impossible, this memorable landing stands put as one of the most glorious that ever was attempted; but Anza,c- Day has a wider significance. It has come to be recognised as a day of remembrance, not only of individual achievement, which has been fittingly described as a baptism of fire ce.lebrajting the birth of) a nation, the great amt glorious Anzacs, but of the whole titajnic struggle; with all its glories, its sacrifices, and bitter memories. It peems likely .tha.t as the years l go by the celebration of Anzac Day will come to be more and more the outstanding celebration in connection with the Great War. What could be more fitting ? As, we think of the doings of the Anzacs our hearts cannot but be stirred with pride a ; nd thankfulness for their efforts and their example. We do wejl to remember, from .time to time, the sacrifices made for us a.nd for the cause of righfeousneps and freedom, and to think seriously of the lessons of the' war. Are we worthy, successors of .the Anzacs ? Many of us are just beginning to realise that the winning of the war was not the end of tyranny and injustice, but rea.lly only the first shot of the campaign, in which we all haye to do our part. If we are to be worthy succes-' sors ,to the great Anzacs, and if their sacrifices, are not to be in vain, we must not sit with idle hands, but put our best efforts to tile .task for which our gallant soldierri gave their lives, tlia.t of. crushing greed, selfishness, and tyra, nny, and helping .to bring in that state of peace and goodwill on earth that will make war impossible.
