The annual report, presented by the president, read 'as follows: — “In presenting the annual report and balance-sheet I must congratulate you on the successful season. Although when all accounts are paid we will shOiw a deficiency, you must bear in mind that the Waikato Rugby owes, us a, return match, which when played should show a profit. We played Waikato, King Country, and an Auckland B team, and our players gave us a very creditable display and justified our. belief that they are strong enough to go on tour this season. At the end of last treason the Piako ,Rugby Union donated £3O and the Pa.eroa Rugby Union £36 10s 5d to the touring 'account of- the; Thames Valley Rugby Union, and I trust that with the help eft the N.Z. Rugby Union and the other sub-unions we will be-able to; send our players oh tour this year. I would strongly recommend that in future a percentage of the gate from all Poland Cup matches be given to the Thames Valley Rugby Union .to. enable. It ti> be on ttie sa,me footing as other unions, and so enable our players .to have a chance of selection in tlte AU Black team. “In passing, I woiuld like to thank . the executive committee for their at- ' tention to duty, and trust that we are on the eve of yet another successful season.” , Mr Lockyer said that the Piako ’ union had decided to make their ''donation the same as tihat of the Paeroa union. The balance-shee.t showed receipts totalling £2Ol Ils Bd, including gate receipts £97 Ils, 6d. Thei expenditure totalled; £l9O 19s id, leaving a credit balance of £ll 12s 7d, Which was? £4' 9s, lees than that of the previous year. The touring fund acfeount showed ■ a credit of £66 5s s d, being donations of £3O from the Piako Rugby Union and £36 10s Sd -from the Paeroa, Union. The balance-sheet'was. adapted. . Commenting on .the suggestion in the report that a percentage, of. the' Poland' Cup gates, be given to he Thames Valley Union, Mr Callaghan said that this had been tried' in the past and found unsatisfactory. He would favour'a levy on eub-unions. A percentage basis was favoured by the Piako and Paeroa delegates, and a recommendation was made by Mr Pennell to the effe'et that 20 per cent, of the Poland Cup. gates should; be paid to the Thames Valley.,Union. For the first time two full rounds were played, the teams competing being Pajeroa (2), Hikutaia,, Karangahake, • Convent, and Netherton. Unfortunately the Convent team was unable to fulfil its engagements after the finst few games, and the boys were allotted to the Paeroa school. Towards the end of the season Karangahake was handicapped by a, shortage of players,. For the second year in succession Netherton was successful in winning the competion, last year with an unbeaten 1 ' record. ’ / „■
The union played.,three reprejseaita-. tive matches, two against Waihi and one against Piako,. losing the former but winning the latter. “A number of the boys played in the Goldfields .team which competed at Auckland for the Northern Roller mills Shield, in conjunction with, players from the Waihi union. Although not successful, we were defeated by one point by both Auckland and Whangarei, the winners and runnersup, respectively. “It is hoped that '.this year Piakowill, join with this union, thus enabling the Thames, Valley to be represented by a stronger team. That Paeroa boys were able to participate in this tournament ,w|as- due almost wholly to the enthusiasm with wihch the Paeroa Rugby Union took up the request for financial assistance. The money which the union raised was not only sufficient to pay the boys’ 'expense's,, but i,t enabled this union to purchase a set of representative jerseys, and a credit balance remains. The thanks df this union are due to the Paeroa union. “This report would be incomplete without referring - .to Mr Johnson’s willing assistance with 'representative teams, and without thanking the. Hauraki Plains Gazette for the many courtesies extended to .the union during the past year.” The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted : President, Mr J. Elliot;.vice president, Mr G. H. Taylor - ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. E. Bigelbw; committee, the president vice-president, and Messrs Rice a.nd Sale. The question of the draw, and 'also the purchase of footballs, was left, in the hands olf Messrs Taylor and .
