Anzac Day will fall this year on a Sunday, and the question has- been raised whether, following .the customary practice with moving holidays, the observance will be postponed until the Monday. 'So far the law is concerned there is no provision for tire postponement of the, celebration. Anzac Day was declared a public holiday by the Act of 1920, and as a public holiday it might have been transferred from a Sunday to the following Monday. But in the following year, or, rather, late* in the session, of. 1921-22, the Legislature removed the day from the list of public holidays and decreed that thereafter April 25 should be. observed in all respects as if it we're’a Sunday. On the legal side, therefore, no difficulty arises, since the statute refers to the specific date and to that date only. No difficulty arises, aga,in, on the social side or on the spiritual side. Anzac Day is not a public holiday set, apart for recreation or rejoicing. It is declared to jje a sacred day, to be observed, in the words of the Statute, “in commemoration of the part taken by New Zealand troops in the Great War, and in memory of those who gave their lives for the Empire.”
