BENZINE TINS.

A ROADSIDE MENACE.

COUNTY COUNCIL ACTION.

At the lasit meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council the following was the text of a letter received from the North Island Motor Union, through the New Zealand Counties’ Association :—

“At an executive meeting of my union held recently several complaints were received on the Pad habit motoiists have-of leaving empty benzine tins on the roads. A very serious case hajs; been pointed out by the Secretary of the Department of Justice wherein a native child lost its lif® owing to lighting a fire under a partly empty benzine tin found on the roadsjide,' thus causing an explosion. “My executive are of the opinion that the Counties’ Association should take steps to make it an offence to lep : ve benzine tins on the road.” The Counties’ Association requested the County Council to give the matter ite: earnest consideration, and it was hoped that every endeavour would be made to abate the dangerous nuisance.

The chairman (Mr W. F. Johnstone) said that on travelling through the country he ha,d noticed a trail of benzine tins from one end of the Island to the other- The practice was . just becoming a nuisance, but the difficulty was to know how to check the objectionable and dangerous habit. He did not think .the installation of petrol pumps, . would wholly do away with the practice. If a by-law .was framed motorists from leading benzine tins on the roadcidc’ it would probably mean that motorists; would throw' the receptacles into farmers’ paddocks;.

Cr. Hubbard : Yes, and the farmers .would promptly throw them back on to the road again.

It was resolved to advise the association that the council was prepared ,to support a n y measure that would tend to check the practice.
