JOY RIDE IN A BARROW. INEBRIATE WHEELED TO LOCK-UP TOO DRUNK TO STAND OR WALK. The. sight of a; helplessly drunken man being wheeled along the Frankton station platform'on a barrow greeted the gaze of passengers; waiting for their trains at midday on Monday (says the Waika,to Times); The inebriate had just been removed from, the train which had arrived from Putararu, and as he was .too drunk to stand or walk he was placed on a barrow and got a, joy ride on one wheel ,to the police station, a pleasure, to which, however, he was oblivious.. When searched at the station a probationary license was found, on him, which showed that he had been released from Mt. Eden Gaol, on license, a condition of this license being tha,t he should take out, a .prohibition order. This he apparently did. When sufficiently recovered to give an ac'count of himself, William Charles Moore said that he had been in 'steady work for several months at Putararu, and was making his way home to Auckland for Easter, where he had a wife and family. Oh the trajn he was offered drink by a couple of men, which he .accepted. A fairly formidable list of convictions was, handed to the Bench, showing that defendant served one period of ten yea.rs for a very grave offence, and that his latest conviction was of three years’ reformative treatment. Mr D. Seymour, who appeared for accused, described him as a. hardworking man, whose weakness was drink. His. Wonship said he was not concerned so much with defendant’s previous convictions, which were of some years’ standing. For drunkenness he would be fined 5s and costs, and for a. breach of his probation order he would have to pay 20s and cos Us.
