THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. MONDAY, MARCH 15, 1926. THE LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The result of the poll for the election of a licencing committee of five members, which took place on Tuesdav clearly indicates that the time has arrived when the public is prepared to think and judge for itself, and not be guided by street talk or. ‘‘ticket tactics. It is- a high tribute to the integrity and administrative abilities of Messrs, Towers, Brenan, Walters, Marshall, and Wallnutt to find that they have, been elected. All these gentlemen have had considerable experience in local body affairs, and there is evidence that the public has selected tried and trusty men as representatives on the; licensing committee. It is acknowledged that the duties of the committee, this year at least, will be' arduous, for the reason •that the electorate has been without licenses for a long number of years, and the fact that considerable care will require to be exercised in the redistribution of licenses owing to the alterations to ,the boundaries of .the electorate since no license was carried 17 years ago, and- also through the drifting of the population within the area. Electors; should feel assured that .the members whom they have elected will deal with the liquor trade without fear or favour. They have previously displayed their administrativei abilities and business acumen, and it is not likely that they will misplace the confidence tliat .the. public has placed in them. All eyes have been on the Ohinemuri electorate since the carrying of restoration in November last, and the progress of the district under license again will be keenly watched. The onus of putting the trade pn a sound and equitable basis lies very largely in the hands of the committee, and it is not reasonable to suppose that the will fail in their obligations and ’responsibilities.
