MEETING OF COUNCIL. ■ \ —-— ROUTINE BUSINESS. The regular monthly meeting of the Hajiraki Plains County. Council was held at Ngatea on Tuesday, Cr. J. C. Miller presiding over Crs. F. J. Mayn, T. McLoughlin, C. W. Harris, W. Madgwick, C. Parfitt, W. G. Hayward, and H. J. Hare. . The clerk (Mr E. A. Mahony) and the engineer (Mr F. Bash ami. were also in attendance. HELPING THE COUNCIL. To prevent the loss of shingle in the Waikiimete creek and to procure a quantity for the council’s roads, Hlr A. B. Macdonald, Torehape .wrote offering, if the- council, erected a sill in the creek and supplied a scoop, to collect what metal came down a.t each fresh ‘ and to place it on the road at no ,co i 't to the council. The engineer said that unfortun- ' ately the council did not have ,a suitable scoop. . It was decided to accept the offer, the Waitakaruru riding funds to be drawn on for the purchase df a scbop. PLAINS WEST" WATER. The council’s’ waterworks engineer, Mr E. F. Adams, wrote reporting that good progress was being made with the drawings-, specifications and qua.n--r tities for the waterworks of the Hauraki Plaine' west water supply area. He had conferred with Or., Parfitt a ; nd was writing him on the subject. ' . • PIPIROA FERRY. The Thames Chamber of Commerce wired confirming the promise made to contribute £2OO for the Pipiroa ferry on the acceptance o>f the tenders. The chairman reported that the ferry committee had authorised certain work which wa,s now in hand. action was approved of. » POSITION OF FERRYMAN. , V. Bower wrote applying for the position of ferryman at Pipiroa. Owning to- the effects of a war wound, he was unable to work at his ‘ trade. He was prepared to erect a shelter /Near the feny at his own expense "and would devote his whole time to the job.—Referred to the ferry committee. KAIHERE POST OFFICE. The Chief Postmaster, Thames, advised that the removal of the disused post office building from Ngajtea to Kaihere was, in .the hands of the Kaihere settlers. - The clerk said that arrangements had been made to move the building last Monday, MAUKORO DEVIATION. The Piako County Council advised that the plans for the Maukoro deviation and bridge had been forwarded to the Public Works ■ Department, had promised to have them -'passed shortly. Part of the metalling and -approachas was in hand, Leand the • whole of the. work would be under way shortly. ,The council would be pleased .to receivb a cheque for the money drawn'. from the State 'Advances Department on .the. Tahuna Roads Loan. . HAMILTON’S ROAD. < The Horahia Drainage Board wrote drawing attention to and asking that remedial attention be given to Hamilton’s Road to permit storm water . to flow from the edge of the grading to the outlet drain —Referred to engineer. ... PATETONGA QUARRY SITE. . A Morrinsville legal! firm . wrote on behalf of Mr Bennett,- of Patetonga, drawing attention to the danger that existed in connection with the quarry site, purchased by ' the Council some time ago from Mr Patema.n, on account of the number p/'of skids and other , timbers used in * connection with the old sawmilling operations being ' washed down against bridges, thus forming a succession of dams■ that would carry away with disastrous results, in the event of a flood. The' matter was referred to Crs. ' Mayn and McLoughlin. \ MOTOR LORRY REGULATIONS. The council’s” inspector, Mr R. H. Cameron, forwarded his comments on a Counties Association letter. He pointed out that few motor lorries carried put identification discs showing the legal loads, as required by the heavy traffic regulations, and suggested that the by-l.aw.be strictly enforced. He had not found any unlicensed lorries in use. • The clerk said that it was the inspector’s duty to see that the discs .'i were on the lorries. KEREPEEHI POUND. Wallace Booth, Kerepeehi, app’ied for "a lease of the Kerepeehi pound site, or alternatively, to rent it monthly.—Referred to Cr. - Nicholson and the clerk for '.action. ‘ BILLIARD ROOM LICENSE. ; ’ The application of F. N. Truelove, ■ of Turua, for a billiard room license was granted. CONCRETE PIPESI *An application from , the Hauraki Drainage Boa.rd to purchase fourteen 3-ft. concrete pipes, which had been removed from the culverts at the Wharepoa ferry corner.—Referred to Cr. Madgwick arid .the engineer. The board’s request for permission to place the same pipes in Porritt’® outlet under the Turua-Netherton Road was granted. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.' The county inspector, Mr R. H. Cameron, reporting for the month, mentioned that two informations had been laid against the same person for overloading. Drivers’ licenses had been inspected on Wilson’s, road on the day of the Te A'roha races, and one bus and three Auckland car drivers were found without licenses. Two. carters’ and twenty-four drivers’ licensee- had been'issued during February. Six building had been iissued. —Adopted. CLERK’S HOLIDAYS. Cr. Parfitt said that as the March meeting would be the last at which Mr Walton; would be in the council's! employ he would like to see the ■' council’s, appreciation of his services placed on record. Mr Walton had not .taken any holidays since his appoint- ’ ment, and he would move that he be
given three months’ salary for past legal services’. - . Crs. Madgwick and Mayn supported the motion, pointing out that) the council had had the benefit of Mr Walton’s lega.l training free, and in voting him three months’ salary the council would be effecting a great saving.
The chairman said that had the council only had an ordinary clerk ifi would have to pay majiy hundreds of pounds for legal advice. Taking all the facts into consideration the council was getting off very lightly in voting three months’ salary. The motion was carried. GENERAL BUSINESS. J The i formal resolution regarding the maintenance of ijhe newly metalled roads in the- Patetonga riding, required by the Public Works Department in connection with a subsidy, was carried. On the motion Cr. Mayn, the engineer, was instructed to prepare estimates for a ’catchment area for metal in the Maukqro landing roa,d stream and to report on the suitability of other streams in the locality.
An advance against its proportion of the county rates, in the event df necessity for the patching of the Turua roads was authorised to be made to the Tovzn Board.
On the represenn.ttaion of Cr. Harris, the engineer was instructed to have repairs effected to the back Miranda road.
A vote of £3O for the reconstruction of the wharf shed at Waitakaruru was authorised at the request o' 1 ? Ci. Harris.
The engineer was instructed to prepare estimates for metalling in gravel 54 chains of the Patetonga road between the Maukpio landing and Pollen’s street.
