GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES.

: OHINEMURI COUNTY WORKS. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. In reply to a Letter alleging delay in the authorisation of Government; subsidies, the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works|, informed the member for .the district, Mr A l . M. Samuel, that an investigation has been made, and the, position is as folr lows:— WATHI-WHANGAMATA ROAD. /Proposals, covering work on this road were submitted by the local body, but progress could not be made pending legalisation of the deviation on which the expenditure was to take pla : ce. It is anticipated that legalisation will be completed at a comparatively early date, but any delay which has occurred in this case would appear attributable to the council itself, for after the legalisation plans had | been prepared it was found that they i were incorrect in certain details and i revision was required. I ROAD AT WAITOKI. “This is a portion pf the PaeroaHami.lton main highway, and proposals for the expenditure of the grajit in question were submitted on December 10, 1925, but it has; been necessary for the Public Works Department to enter into discussion with the local body and the Main'Highways Board concerning certain details of the conditions and specifications for the work.' The matter is, however, at present receiving the consideration of the Main Highways Boat’d. WAITAWHETA-WAIHI ROAD. Proposals were received from the council on October 1, 1925, but formal approval was delayed pending the submission by the council or a suitable resolution regarding the future maintenance of this particular. rbad. I understand that approved proposals, were returned to .the council on December .10, 1925, and that the necessary authority ■to proceed has been issued. FARRELLY’S ROAD. “Proposals were submitted by the council on November 25, 1925, formal authority being issued, on December 9, 1925, and the approved proposals duly returned t'o the council under' date December 24. BYALL’S ROADi “Proposals, were received from the ; council on November '25, 1925, authority issued on December 9, 1925, and • the approved proposals duly returned to the council, on December 24, 1925. PUKEWERA ROAD. “Proposals were' received from the council on November 25, 192'5, but after examination it was found that some' slight amendments were required. Authority was issued on December 9, 1925, and .approved proposals duly returned to'the council on De-, cember- 10.” OBSERVATIONS. In concluding the Minister )Vrote that it. would therefore! be seen that, generally speaking, no undue delay had 'occurred in connection with the approval of the proposals submitted by the council, but i n certain, cases it had been necessary to discussi the proposals before formal ’authority to proceed with the work could be issued. Each of the various: items, however, now appeared to have been straightened but, and the position would no doubt be satisfactory to. the council.

The chairman, said that with the exception of the Waihi-Whangamata road all the works were in band or completed.
