The engineer to the county (Mr E. Shaw) submitted the following report to. the meeting of tjhe Ohinemuri County Council on Thursday la r st “The following works) have been completed: Erection of Waitoki Stream bridge, metalling 16 chains of Old Te Aroha Road at Waitoki in the Mangaiti riding, also metalling Pukewera and Waimata roads and forming, culverting, and bridgiing Pattersons Road—all in the Waihi riding. The concreting of Chappell’s Crossing is completed, and the metalling of the approaches is now being proceeded with. All, the other works under contract are proceeding satisfactorily. The approval of the proposals for Leopold’s Ro,ad and Chappell’s Crossing came, to hand along with the authorities for Davidson’s road and Leopold’s road. .Tenders are called for the latter, and the other works are being carried out by day labour. “Tenders were called during the month for carting metpl from the dump at Tirohia to Waitoki, under Main Highways, and Mitchell Bros, being the lowest their tender was accepted. “The grader was used grading several roads in the Waihi and Waikino ridings with very satisfactory results. “A start has been made by the Railway Department with the-overhead bridge at the Old Taur’anga Road crossing. The department’s engineer asks while the bridge is in. course of erection that the approaches be proceeded with simultaneously, so as to give them a chance to put in the cattle-stops; and close the crossing immediately the bridge is| ready to take the traffic. “With reference to the petition which came before you on (October 29 last from W. -D. Keys; and others, in regard to improvements to Puemanuka Road, negotiations have been going on in the meantime with the owners of the land through which the canal passes (Messrs W. D. Keys and JHandley, junr.) Tor .the purpose of a, deviation which would make the better road, as it is/ well above flood level, and would be in keeping with the rest of the road between Mill Road and the old Waihou River. They have agreed to give the land for, the new road provided the . old one is. closed and added to their holdings. I would recommend that the exchange bemade, and put into legal form, and that the Public Works Department be asked for assistance towards levelling the spoil on the drain edge, for which they are partly liable. “Crushing ig- proceeding at the Romat# quarry, and metal, is being delivered on Old Te Aroha Road, and. various roads in the Kaimanawa riding ; also a quantity is being dumped.” The ,repor.t was adopted, and .the . engineer, was authorised to have the approaches to the overhead bridge bn the old Tauranga road gone on with.
