In connection with the new motor vehicle’regulattonis’ which came into force last year the majority of motorists know now that in the event of an accident they are bound by law to report the matter to the police, providd, <?f course, they ,are concerned in the accident, says the Napier Daily Telegraph. It is also well' known that any driver must supply his name and address to a constable or traffic inspector when requested to doeo, but what is not generally known is that the driver is also bound by law to supply his name and address to any other person on request. At a recent sitting of .the Magistrate’s Court in Hastings a prosecu-, •tion was brought under thijs* heading, and the defendant pleaded that although he knew he was bound to give his name and address to a constable or a traffic inspector, he did not know that an ordinary man had the right to this privilege as well, even though he was concerned in the accident. However, the defendant in question is wiser now. All motorists would' be wiser if they made a note of this point, as the penalty which may be inflicted its- a maximum of £2O. •
