LICENSING COMMITTEE.
CANDIDATES FOR OHINEMURI,
LARGE NUMBER NOMINATED.
In connection with .the election of a licensing committee for the Ohinemuri electorate, the . following have been duly nominated for the five seats on .the committee :—
Paeroa : P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards; B. Gwilliam, W. Marshall, A. D. McGuire, W. H. Taylor, W. J. Towers. Waihi: W. E. Busch, J. J. Callaghan, H. B. Dale, J. Murray, - T. K. Paterson, R. P. Philpot, J. E. Slevin, F. W. Stamp, S. Wakefield, W. M. Wallnutt. Waitekauri: S. H. Morgan. Owharoa: C. Mason. Waitoa: F. W- Walters. Mo.rrins.viHe: S. S. Allen. Kerepeehi: J. M. Thompson. Some of the candidates may not be particularly well, known to electons; and attention is drawn to the advertisements appearing in this paper, together with .the following brief biographical sketches of those whose announceriients appear in this issue. MR. J. M. THOMPSON. Mr John Moore Thompson was one of the first Crown settlers in Kerepeehi, and has been resident in the district for over 15 years. It was only after the presentation of a large and representatively signed petition that Mr Thompson consented to nomination, and he now stands as an independent, and one who pledges himself to do what he can to improve the liquor traffic. As a public man Mr Thompson has been a member of the H'orahi.a Drainage Board since its inception, and, also a committeeman of the Hauraki A. and P. Association. He has taken 'a keen and active interest in all branches) of sport, and at the present .time holds the office of president of, the Kerepeehi Association Football Club. Mr Thompson was' created a Justice of the Peace some years ago. - . MR. T. K. PATERSON. Mr Thomas K. Paterson is a wellknown business man of Waihi, arid one who has had a lengthy experience of loc.al body affairs. At the present time Mr Paterson is a member bf the council of the Waihi Chamber of Commerce, a riiember o& the School of Mines, a borough councillor, and a director of the technical school. As, an independent Mr Paterson pledges; himself to do what he can to secure equal treatment for' all. MR. W. MARSHALL. i It may be superfluous to comriient on the public activities of Mr Marshall ,as his keen judgment, impartial fairness., and sound business acumen have already been deflected in the many affairs with which he i s connected in this town. Suffice it to> say that Mr Marshall has bben a member of the Paeroa Borough Council. for seven years, and Mayor for over three yearjs; During his .term as head of the council. many improvements, and progressive works have been undertaken, many of which have been carried to a successful, conclusion. Mr Marshall is also a member of the executive of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Paeroa Rugby Union, president of the Young Citizen’s League, president of the Beautifying Society, and holds a similar office in the Athletic Club, Benevolent Society arid many other institutions. He has also been a Justice of the Peace 'for a number of years. A man of marked ability, Mr Marshall can be depended upon, if elected to the Licensing Committee, .to carry but the duties appertaining to that office in tfie same zealous, ,and impartial manner .that has won him admiration and respect from the people of Paeroa and district. - MR. JOSEPH E. SLEVIN.
To m ( any, of the electors Mr Joseph Edward Slevin, of 'VVqdhi, is not a stranger, as he was a former member of the Ohinemuri Licensing Bench in the years gone by. Mr Slevin hasbeen a resident of Waihi for 1 the' past forty yeans, and during practically -the whole df that period he has, been actively connected; witji public affairs in his town. At the present time he is chairman of the Waihi Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and has been a member of the Borough Council for the last seven and.a-half years. Last year Mr Slevin unsuccessfully coil-tested-the Mayoralty .against Mr W. M. Wallnutt. For many years he was secretary of the Minens’ Union. Mr Slevin is particularly well and favourably known throughout the goldfields.
A ticket that has set itself up is Messrs S. H. Morgan, C. Mason, A. D. McGuire, W. H. Taylor, and B. GwilJiam. These candidates state in their notice that they are out for Tree houses, and hotels' to be conducted for the public good, and a fair distribution of licenses. MR. S. H. MORGAN. Mr Stephen H. Morgan is a wellknown settler of Waitekauri, where he has carried on (farming operations for many years. Prior to that he was engaged in mining pursuits at Waitekauri and Karangahake. For a peirod of nearly ten years Mr Morgan has been a member of the Ohinemuri County Council as a 'representative of Waikino Riding. Apqrt from local body matters Mr Morgan has for many years taken a keen interest in Friendly Society work, and was Auckland Provincial Grand Master of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. Mr Morgan holds moderate views‘on the liquor question; and is, standing as, an independ-:' ent candidate. MR. COLIN MASON; Mr C. Mason is a farmer at Wajtawheta, and has been in the district for some years, coming from the Taranaki province, where he held many public positions. In his district he has. interested himself in the local school, and roading matters. MR. ARTHUR DAVID McGUIRE.
Mr A. D. McGuire ijs well known throughout this district, having been in Paeroa,. from childhood. He has been connected with public life for over 20 years, with some considerable credit to himself and the various bodies he has represented. He was chairman of the Karangahake School
Committee 1 for 20 years; also chairman of the Ma,ckaytown. Domain. Bo,ard, and for the last 14 years has been a member of the Ohinemuri County Council. While following the pursuits of mining he was oh the council of the School ot Mines at Karangahake. He is a pastmaster of .the Karangahake Lodge of Oddfellows, and for some years was a member of the District Management Committee of Oddfellows. He has been on the committee of the Ohinemuri Jockey ( Club 'for years, and this, year is its president MR. WILLIAM HUIA TAYLOR. Mr W. H. Taylor is well known throughout .the electorate, having taken a, keen interest in public life for years. As a contractor his work has taken him into every part of the district. For some years; he was a member of the Paeroa Borough Council, and chairman of tjhe local School Committee. He has always taken a very keen interest in public life .and sjjort. MR. BENJAMIN GWILLIAM. Mr B. Gwilliam is also a wellknown personality throughout the district of some thirty years’ standing. He followed mining for some years, later taking up auctioneering in Paer roa, and is at present farming at Netherton. While at Karangahake and Waitekauri he interested himself in - educational 1 and social matters, and for nine yeays was chairman of the Waitekauri School Committee.
