CRICKET.
MATCHES ON THE PLAINS.
THAMES TEAMS DEFEATED.
On Saturday ’two matches were ,played between Thames and .Plains teams, .and the result was a double victory for the Plaine representatives. There- can be little doubt that the Thames teams were not at home, on the concrete wickets, • and the outfields, as, available on the Plains, are not calculated ,to give a batsman an opportunity to display his uSiuali foim,. even to play good cricket. This is a matter that requires very serious, attention by the Plains association if it is the wish for cricket toi improve. It is better to have one good central ground than a number of inferior grounds scattered over the district. In the “A” -game the home , team batted first, and McDonald, Green, and Macklow were the chief contributors to the total'. Woodbridge was unlucky in being caught behind the sticks early. The Thames wicketkeeper gave a fine exhibition, and short runs were at a premium. The bowling by ■ the visitors, with the exception of Buchan, was not difficult. Buchan kept an excellent length, and had a good action in delivery. Thames did not show any convincing command over the Plainsi bowling, but the pace off the wicket was probably the reason for this: Gibson has a good variety of off strokes, his square, cutting beihg very convincing.
At Pipiroa the “B” match w,as a (succession of surprises), and at one stage 1 the Plains team had six wickets down for 5 runs. A good recovery was made by Stretton and McPherspm and this saved ithe game for the •Plains. Gordon and McLeary were the best of the Thames bowlers. O’Neil brought disaster to the Thames- batting, his average being five wickets for three runs.
The return, matches.;will be interesting; as the Plains' representatives will then have an oppoitunity of gauging .their strength on the, turf wicket. ' .'
