Ctae of the chief ob- < jects to. receive •consideration has • been the request to the PqstmaisterGeneral .that on completion pt the new post office at Paeroa, it should be raised to .the status, of a, chief post .office.’ . ' - At Tuesday evening’s meeting of ■ 'the-.chamber the following letter to ...tiie Chief Postmaster was read, towith the repiy received ' ’ “Ab a recent meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce attention was _ drawn to the fact that it is- proposed • to erect a new post; office, at Thames. ’ “it is not known whether your de- ’ partment hag- in view any rearramge'r" ment’ of the present Thames postal ” district as, constituted, although I believe that it is generally admitted ■ that it .would be a considerable 1m- & provement if the chief post office were more centrally situated. ... x “Should such a step be contem- - plated, and before the new building at .’ Thames 'is erected, my chamber de1' sires to place the claims' of Paeroa ■ Mas the chief postal centre before you your consideration. “As-you.areof course aware, a new ; ■ and up-to-date'post office is now ih course: of erection in Paeroa-, which ?■: should'materially add to the suitabil- ■ ity of’Paeroa as-,the chief post office. -' “At the present juncture Pa-eroa is an important railway . junction, but • with the approaching completion of . .the Ea/t Coast line, which will-ef- : . fectivejy link up the Bay. of Plenty ’ district, and the proposed- PaeroaPpkepo' link, Paeroa will, become a foßr-way junction of considerable size y on which all- mail trains: must con—- ■ verge. “The Paerba-Hamilton, Paeroa-Waihi-Tauranga,'Paeroa-Thames, and • ■ > Paercja-Auckland via Haufaki .Plains, routes, have all been declared main .. and converge at Paeroa. ‘ Further, on account of the relative :-r position of Paeroa' to the Haurajti Plains and Thames Vailley, the ar-, ranging of main services and mail' contracts to outlying portions of the ' - district not served by rail should be ?*’ greatly facilitated. J > “Already, as., you will be awa.re, Paeroa is- connected with Auckland ’ by the short direct route across the Hauraki Plains, and that all exchanges-, in the' Thames Postal district obtain their bureau connections .with / Auckland through .the Paeroa; ex- ” change. . '• ' ’/ '■ “My chamber has, had this matter /’ under consideration for some time (past, buthjelieved that, although desirable, your, department would be un- ' . willing to make any rearrangement until new were required. ; account, therefore, of the 'earSy. completion of the new post office .at ■ Paeroa, my chamber feels that; the '■■■■'. time is now opportune for such rearrangement. It, is believed that >1 ’ .Thames, situated as ; it is on .the edge ' of the ■ postal district, is quite un'suited ■ as a - chief postal centre, and ’ that the transaction of postal. busi- ,. , ness could be more expeditiously and .' '' ; economically supervised from a more > central, position, .and, my chamber ’’ therefore begs to urge the claims of : Paeroa in-this direction.” _« '• ’ • The' following is the reply received: — ' • “In reference to your /Better of the / - 22nd ultimo, representing the claims ’ of Paeroa-as a suitable location for ■ the chief post office of. the Thames postal district:.! beg, by direction, to • inform, -you that the representations your chamber have been given very, careful consideration; and it is . regretted,.- that the request for the 'raising of the the Paeroa post office cannot be agreed to.” ,
