PRACTICAL SYMPATHY.

NEIGHBOURS’ KINDLY ASSISTANCE DURING ILLNESS. Quite recently two cases of! kindly assistance given by settlers to their less fortunate have been brought under our notice. Mr James Thomas,, of Ferry Road, Hiku.taia, had. a very pleasant surprise on returning to his, home from Auckland a few days back. For some five weelfls- past he has* been confined to his, house through illness, and, being quite una t ble to do any v(ork, went to Auckland to bring his, daughter, who had been an. inmate of the hospital, home. Prior to leaving he had discussed with his son the matter of getting the h,ay harvested, bwt ■the odds being against him he decided not to bother. Judge his surprise on returning home to find a fine big stack of hay. The. neighbours, in a truly neighbourly fashion, seeing the trouble, had banded together and in a very short time, and with good team work, had soon harvested the crop of hay. Mr Thomas is naturally very thankful and proud of his neighbours, who assisted him in a time of need. Some time back the ungrassed portion —some 45 acrep—of the late Mr Percy Corbett's farm on (the Waihi Plains wasi ploughed up and put in readiness for grassing. Deceased had procured the necessary seed and fertiliser, and was about to grass the area when he was .taken ill. Hea.ring of this,, neighbouring settlers' decided to form a working bee and put the seed in, and quite a number of them have been at work during the past two or three days. This, thoughtful and kindly action will no doubt be much appreciated by Mrs Corbett.
