BAND ROTUNDA.

QUESTION OF ITS REMOVAL.

SUGGESTION BY 'CHAMBER.

At a. meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce held last night a lengthy discussion took place as. to the advisability of removing the band rotunda from its present location in front of the new post office. Mr E. W. Porritt favoured ite removal to possibly a site in the new playing fields in the domain. He suggested that the base should remain and the Bradford Memorial be brought down from Primrose Hill and re-erected on the site of the rotunda. At a small expense the fountain could be reinstalled, and the balance of the space, with the co-operation of the Beautifying Society, could be utilised as a rockery or- for garden plots. He was of the opinion that it was, desirable that the rotunda should be removed and the memorial reerected. It might also be possible to provide a, good carriageway between the site and the po.s.t office. Mr W. Marshal said that it would be helpful to the Borough Council if the chamber could suggest where the ■rotunda could be re-erected. There was certainly no.t room in the playing fields of the domain.

In reply to a member Mr Marshall said that the council would l certainly sell the structure if a suitable site could not, be found. It would not agree to dismantling the building and storing it for future use. Mr C. H. Pascoe contended that the present site of the rotunda was unsuitable, a.nd especially now it| marred the view'of the front of the post office. .

In answer to Mr G. H. Taylor Mr Marshall s.aid that the rotunda was the property of the Beautifying Society, but the council would be quite within its rights in having it removed if it was considered desirable. Mr D. Leach moved to the effect that in the opinion of the chamber the rotunda, should be moved, as it interfered with the view of the poet office. Seconded by Mr Pascoe. A desultory discussion followed as to a suitable location for the building. A number of sites were suggested, such as in front of the Public Works office and at the racecourse, but no decision was arrived at. It wais' resolved that a copy if the resolution should be sent to the Borough Council and the Beautifying Society. ’
