MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council v,‘as held last night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding overt he followings Crs. B. Edwards, P. E. Brenan, F. E. shall) presiding over the following ■ Flatt, H.: J; Hare, G. P. de Castro, E. A. Porritt, J. Pinder, and the assistant town clerk (Miss A. J. _ButlerJ. WATER AT QUARRY. G. Kehely, the lessee of the Paeroa quarry, requested that an half-inch water pipe should be laid 4in to his plant, and inquiring the cost. . ’ ' The Mayor said that the estimate for the work was £l4 17s. and a; reply had been sent to the effect that the council- would be prepared to provide the connection on payment by the applicant of half- .that amount. The. annual charge for water would be 10s per horse-power for steam engine and £3 for a ( spray nozzle. The action of the Mayor was confirmed. SANITARY The owner of the Commercial Hotel wrote requesting that in view of restoration of licenses, permission be to retain the existing sanitary conveniences until the election of the licensing -committee. On the . motion of Cr. de Castro, seconded by Cr. Hare, it was resolved to grant an extension of time for linking up with the sewerage system. RUBBISH CART. The Feilding Borough Council wrote offering to dispose of a rubbish ca,rt for £4O. It was, agreed that it was desirable to have the cart, but; finances would not permit of the purchase. REMOVAL OF GAS MAINS. Application was made by a Thames iron founder to open Puke Road for the purpose of removing gas mainsPermission was granted, subject to -adequate protection of .the public, and that the firm accepts responsibility for any accident that might occur as a result of opening the side of the road. PAYMENT OF RATES. An Auckland firm of solicitors wrote inquiring if rates were, due on pairt of the Opatito block, Paeroa, and if the rates claimed as due by the council were struck prior to portion of the block being sold to the Crown. The Mayor said that the Government h,ad purchased, 18% acres of the block- at a cost of £7o'oo, nearly four times the value, in his opinion, for the purpose of saving the owners the paying of- rates. . »• I-t was resolved x to press immedi<ately for payment of the current year’s rates, as the rates had been struck prior to the sale, and the time for payment had already elapsed. OPUKEKO DRAIN. Six settlers applied for monetary assistance in cleaning the Opukeko drain. - The sum of £2 10s. was granted subject to the work being done to the satisfactory of the foreman. loan MONEY. The State Advances Office andvised that matters pertaining to the loap of £ll,OOO were- receiving attention, and the council would Jae advised as soon as the Order-in-Council was gazetted. LAND FOR STREET. The district engineer,.N-Z. Railways, replying to an inquiry, ptated that the land taken from Mr G. Dean for road purposes was, ap stated in the proclamtaion, taken for a street diversion, and as such no further aci tion was necessary. The,- Mayor said that; .the letter cleared up the matter, and the street had actual.ly.been vested in the cbun cil. TAYLOR’S AVENUE. The same writer advised that arrangements were being made for the supply of 200 yards of unscreened metal for Taylor’s Avenue, and requested that arrangements be made to ta,ke delivery. CIRCUS LICENSES. An application from Wirth's Circus for a license was granted subject to the traffic being confined to the streets capable of carrying the loads,. A similar application from St. Leon’s- Circus was also granted, together with the use of the domain on payment of the usual fees. MUNICIPAL RESERVE. The Department of Land and Survey acknowledged receipt of the Crown grant fee in connection with the acquisition of sections 2 and 3, block -XVI., for a municipal reserve. The letter also stated that so far as it had been ascertained from the records no tenancy had been granted over the area. Should anyone be in occupation the department desired to be informed, so that investigation could be made; The Mayor said that the expenditure of £1 covered the total expenses and cost to the borough of acquiring such a desirable reserve. The negotiations with the department were now finalised. Cr. Brenan remarked that he thought the area, in common with Crown sections in the borough, possessed an honorary custodian. On the motion of. Cr. Edwards it was resolved to record the thanks and appreciation to the Mayor for the able manner in which he had conducted the negotiations. The area was a. decided acquisition .for the people of the borough.
