PORTFOLIO OF MINTS.
DISSATISFIED WITH MINISTER.
COROMANDEL WANTS MR. RHODES At yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, the following letter was received from the Coromandel County Council, relative to the portfolio of Mines! with a request that if ,the council was in sympathy with the object it support the request by approaching ,the Hon. Prime Minister. It was pointed out that it was of vital interest to the Hauraki mining district, and immediate action was necessary. The letter to ithe Prime Minister read :— .
“I take the liberty of approaching you on the question bf the portfolio of Mines-. It is the opinion of the majority of the mining men .here that the present Minister of Mines does •not understand the wants of the Hauraki mining district. Mr T. W. Rhodes, M.P., has a thorough knowledge of its requirements, the whole of his life having been spent between Coromandel and Thames. Mr Rhodes ..acted as- a registered mining agent here for about 25 years, and was' also personally interested 'in numerous mining ventures. He is a man bf untiring energy, and his extensive knowledge of mining law and usage would enable him to administer the portfolio with justice and discretion.” The chairman said that it was not a matter the council could take up. Cr. Morgan scorned the idea that any notice would" be taken of the letter. It was resolved to take no action.
