On Saturday the wind locally veered round to a westerly direction, but the day was fine. Yesterday the increased, and during the day heavy showers, accompanied by thunder, passed over the town. Although of short duration heavy rain was recorded while the weather lasted. Last., night and early this morning there was a decided fall in the temperature, and the weather to-day has a tauch of early autumn in it. - ,

The registrar, Mr W. E. Wurd,-'ad-vises that there were 4 births, no deaths, and no marriages in Paeroa during lest month, ending, yesterday.

Notification has been received that the local high school has been raised to. grade 5C during the current year, entitling it to a istaff of sjx assistant teachers and one probationary assistant.

It is estimated that about 150 motor vehicles carrying passengers from the Hauraki Plains and Paeroa visited the Waihi Beach on Friday.

The auxiliary scow Tuhoe arrived at the Ngahina wharf from Auckland early on Friday morning. After discharging general cargo and 600 cases of benzine for .the district the s.cow left on the return journey to Auckland at 7.30 p.m.

Keen interest,'in the success of the local ( hoys. at the Hikutaia Sports was shown by Mr A. M. Another of the Ngatea Tennis Club’s fortnightly euchre tournaments and dances was held in the haH on Thursday evening, the function proving very enjoyable. The prizes! for the euchre tournament were secured by Mrs Reed and Mr J. Godkin, the bobby prizes going ,to Mrs Bertelsen and Mr O. Cleave.

For pettjness and meanness the actions of a carload of men who passed through the Plains one afternoon last week would be hard to beat. At one of the by-;road corners the c.ar—an expensive limousine—was noticed to stop suddenly, and a man alighted and helped himself to.,three newspapers which were among those left there by the mail, car a few moments before.

The <S6th anniversary of New Zealand as a British' colony passed off quickly at Paeroa on Friday, and the day was observed as a close holiday by shops and offices. Other than a club tournament on the local bowling green there no. extra attractions ip the town. . Perfect weather prevailed, and scores of people visited the Waiiii Beaca, while others sought the picnic grounds and swimming pools at Tarariki Cheek and Komata. A large number of local people also visileo the sports meeting at Hikutaia. Several flags were flown from public buildings

The first meeting this year of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board will be held at Te .Aroha to-morrow.
