DISTRICT NEWS.

NGATEA, DENTAL CLINIC. The Ngatea dental clinic, it Is an* ticipated,' will open on Monday at the same time as the school. In order , that the residents'of the surrounding districts; and of Ngatet( itself, may understand exactly the use and aims of this clinic the following will, be of interest.

The general idea, of a clinic is one of promoting the general health of a definite section of a community. In this case it is the dental hqgiene of the - community that is being cared for. Unfortunately, owing to the immense amount of treatment that is always necessary when the care pf a new community is undertaken, it is found impossible to treat everybody. Hence, for the purposes of the Nga-" tea dental clinic, • treatment will, of necessity, be confined to those children of primer age. This is, generally speaking, up to the age of eight years, although children of eight years are included. Ngatea will be the first school to be treated and then a start will be made with those schools which are more*-remote, and those which are rendered at all inaccessible during the winter months. Owing to the difficulty of transport of dental equipment the treatment of as many children as possible will be undertaken at Ngatea. Where the transport of the child will prove an insuperable obstacle other arrangements may have to be made. PLAINS VETERINARY CLUB. , The executive of the Farmers’ Veterinary Club met at Ngatea on Thursday, Mr A. J. Andrews presiding. The veterinary surgeon, Mr J. Costello, reported at length on the 95 cashes attended during the month of December.

Four new members were admitted. Reporting on the financial state of the club the secretary stated that the position was improving, as the nonpayens were being weeded out and practically all the members were now signed up s,o that there could be no argument. At the present • time 43 , members owed £250-odd, but this was all good money. In view of the fact that the surgeon had been injured while operating, on a colt the matter of permitting him to perform such work without adequate assistance, was discussed. No decision was reached, it being agreed that the matter, should be considered at a later meeting.

TURUA. ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH FUND. Another effort in the drive to raise funds for the building of a Roman Catholic church at'Turua culminated on Thursday last, when a very successful sale of work, was held in the Victoria Hall. A great variety of goods, representing many months of work by the ladies was, offered, and it met with a ready demand. Tn addii tion there were stalls laden with garden and orchard produce, and cakes and confectionery. The sale was opened in the afternoon, and was continued during, the evening, the produce remaining unsold being disposed of by auction at'a ‘ late hour. * Numerous competitions) and raffles were conducted, the prize-winners being ae follows: Cushion No. 1, Mr C. Home; cushion No. 2, Mr J. Mules; Irish linen pillow-shams, Mr E. Booth; Irish linen supper-icloth, Miss; M. Burfoot ;■ doll, Mr H. Mephan; table-cen-tre No. 1, Miss A.
