THE ANDES TUNNEL. REMARKABLE SPIRAL The great international tunnel through which the Prince of Wales’ train carried him from Argentina into Chile has some remarkable features. It runs in a spiral through the Andes at a height of 10,000 feet above sea-level, and its two miles of track takes from ten to fifteen or more minutes to negotiate, according to the direction in which the train is travelling. The difference is due to the fact that from the Chile side there is a stiff gradient up to the Argentine exit. In toiling upwards the locomotive used to fill the tunnel with, gases, so that gas-masks were almost a necessity, but this has been largely remedied in recent years. On the Chilian side wooden doors are provided, not for defence, but to prevent the train being blown back down the incline when blizzards are raging.
