THE POTATO MARKET.
MUCH EASIER The potato market is very much easier, declared a prominent Pukekohe produce merchant when in conversation with a reporter on Wednesday. “The supply is exceeding the demand, which is probably due to the fact that farmers who have been harvesting during the last few weeks have again confined their attention to the digging of potatoes.” He expressed the opinion that if the weather took up again there would probably be a scarcity of seed potatoes. While the growers would not get a big tonnage per acre, the indications were that they would receive very high prices per ton for seed potatoes. The price paid at present to growers for table potatoes was £8 per ton, as against £9 per ton the previous week. The merchant, when questioned regarding the prospects for exporting, was reticent beyond mentioning that a few inquiries had been received from America.
