TROUT IN THE WAITAWHETA.
Fallowing on representations, made, the secretary of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society (Mr D. Leach) has received advice from the parent, body, Auckland, ithat pheasants have been allotted to the local society. It is the intention to liberate z .these birds on .the Wirihana Estate, Nether, ton, and the Netherton committee has undertaken to liberate, and care for them. By the co-opera-tion and consent of the various' own-; ers of tiie estate the whole area has. been closed for the purpose of a game s,anc, tua,ry. The estate affords pllenty of food and shelter, and it is anticipated that the pheasants will do well there.
A further consignment of pheasants from the Auckland game farm is expected later on in February. Several reports, have been received from settlers stating that the pheasants in the district are looking very welll, and appear to have made good progress during the winter and late spring. The prospects for the shooting season, which opens on May 1, appear very bright this, year. TROUT FISHING. Although little has been heard lately, trout-fishing in the streams of the district is affording anglers quite good sport. At .the present time it is reported that in the Waitawheta Stream, particularly, the fish ii.rc rising wdll to the fly. On Sunday last Mr D. Leach landed a couple of trout of fair size. He states that they were perfect specimens, and were very game, and afforded considerable sport.
About a fortnight ago three sportsmen from Waihi, using the artificiaal fly, landed no less than 13 trout of varying isize from the Waitawheta Stream. The recent floods should have a decidedly beneficial effect on the fishing grounds by freshening up the water and putting more life into the trout.
