HAURAKI DRAINAGE.

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING. The regular meeting of the Hauraki Drainage Board was held a,t Tu•rua on Friday, Mr G. Gray presiding over the following: Messrs. D. G. McMillan, J. Mules, R. Baker, R. H. Heappey, and J. E. Green (clerk). DUAL DRAINS. The clerk of the Horahia Drainage Board wrote on December 14, 1925, stating that a letter had been received from some of the settlers in that boa,rd’s area stating that the floodgates at the Willow Drain outlet were not keeping the water out, and .'.bat Mr Baker, the area representative, had stated that the Hauraki Board w’ould agree to get ,the matter rectified on a 50 per cent, basis with the the Horahia, Board. The Horahia Board would like this statement confirmed, and an approximate estimate of the cost supplied, so that it could discuss the advisability of assisting in remedying any defect that might exist. t

The Horahia Board also desired to know the position regarding the fence along the Te Kauri No. 2 drain, and what provision had been made for protecting the drain. Mr Baker said Mr McConnell had reported that there was nothing wrong with the concrete gate, except that the hinges were stiff. A wooden gate with long hinges would be no.-e satisfactory, as it would open nore readily and let the rubbish out. It w,as decided to’ inform the Hora, hia Board that a wooden gate, costing approximately £l2, w'as the board’s recommendation. Arising out of this discussion, members, pointed out that it w r as significant that during the dry weather an enormous amount of rubbish had to be removed from .the gates at frequent intervals; During the normal summer weather the drain bottoms weer cracking, but during the hot, dry weather the gates became blocked open, so that the tide flowfed in and out. It w’as agreed .that some drastic action should be taken. In regard to the fencing, it was recommended that the Horahia Board pay halt the cost of a three-wire fence. REPAIRS TO GATES. The clerk reported that a very successful experiment had been .made in repairing flood-gates which leaked' slightly owing to the gate not sitting firmly on the hardwood frames. Some felt had been procured, and stripe half an inch wide had been tacked on the outside of the frame to act ,as a cushion for the gate. The cost was about Is a gate, and where it had been tried the result had been very satisfactory, and all the leakages had been stopped. The felt was expected to fest about six months. FINANCE. In reply to a member the clerk said that a settlement had .not been made tq the county Council, for the replacing of the pipes at the Wharepoi Ferry (• rher. An account had not yet been submitted to the Horahia Drainage Board for its share o' the cost of this and other works. The account would-go forward shortly. The authorising of the payment of the accounts brought the meeting to a close.
