BOROUGH WORKS.
REPORT OF COMMITTEE.
PROGRESS' FOR THE MONTH. The following report of the Works Committee was, submitted 'to the Paeroa Borough Council at its meeting on Thursday night: — “With the continuance of fine weather every effort is being made to push on with street improvement works and the extensions 'to the water mains, and we are glad to be able .to report that fair progress has been made during the past month, and particular care has been taken to s,ee that .the holidays did not delay the work; in which connection it is a pleasure to state that all the em-, ployees have responded well by sticking .to their work on all days other than the awa,rd holidayjs. “Arrangements have been made to hire additional horses and a dray to enable street formation to be carried on, and two additional men have been temporarily engaged. The arrangements are working wel.l.
“Aorangi Road, leading .to the railway settlement, and Bus,h Street have been formed t and rolled, and are now ready for metalling. Portion of Bennett Street has been metalled, blinded, and rolled'-
“The metalling of upper Hill Street, and the town end of Moore Road, ha,s been commenced. A start has been made with the formation of lower Hill Street, and the path to the technical school has also been formed. “Supplies of metal from the local quarry have proved quite inadequate, and a small quantity has been secured from Karangahake. This matter is cawing considerable inconvenience and anxiety, as .there still remains a considerable amount of this class of work to be done this summei. “The laying of the din water ma,ins in Arney Street and Station Road, and the connecting up of all the consumers, has been completed with most satisfactory results. Work its now proceeding on the laying of tin mains in Hill Street between Moore Road and Cullen Street, after • .which a report as to the position of the loan account a,nd the' proposed further extensions will be presented to the council! “The question of the street and footpath fronting the new post office is receiving careful consideration, and provided the various levels will permit of a working scheme we recommend that the department be asked to vest the apex of the triangle in the borough council for street poses and the street continued across from Normanby Road to Princes Street.
“Every possible effort has been made to get the Railway Department to complete Taylor’s Avenue. We are of the opinion that some parts of this, will need repairs after the winter, as tb.e formation has not been properly consolidated. The metal in a few places is below the specified depth, and to meet this position the department hats- agreed to supply and deliver in Paeroa 200 ya;rds of unscreened 2%in metal. We propose to us.e this metal on another street in the meantime and do any repairs needed to Taylor’s Avenue out of the loan account to the value of the 200 yards of metal.”
The report was adopted, and it wa,s resolved to record the appreciation of the services of the Mayor and the Committee.
