A number of people from Paeroa and district returned this morning after attending the Thames races, which were held at Takapuna oil Thursday and Saturday.
In response to. a request for volunteers for a transfusion of blood to ii patient in the Hawera Hospital three men and a woman offered their help (states tire Hawera Star)! After a medical test had been made one of the men was chosen. Although the operation was quite a. success the Patient died the following day, as, the aid came too late to saye her life.
At Ohawe, a township on the coast, some five or six miles from Hawera, there is a little cemetery containing tlie graves of twenty-jfour men of the Imperial, and Colonial Forces who died during the Maori War, the majority having been killed in action at the historical Otapawa Pa engagement on January 13, 1866. January 13, the 60th anniversary of the Otaawa battle, marked a unique ceremony—the u nevi ling of a cairn erected in 1907, to which the names of several more war veterans, ha.d recently been added. The ceremony, which was performed by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. R. F. Boli lard), was attended by a representative gathering of the people of Taranaki.
