PAEROA BOROUGH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The first meeting this' year of tbe Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, His Warship the Mayor (Mr W.Marshall) presiding over the following : Crs 0- Edwards, J. W. Silcock, G. . P. de Castro, P. E. Brenan, F. E. Flatt, A Pinder, H. J. Hare, E. A. Porritt. and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). REQUEST FOR HELF’. The director of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind wrote advising that an ex-inmaje of the institution who had qualified highly in the work of piano-tuning was setting up business on his own account at Te Aroha. As he was a married man with two children to support, the council was-asked to assist him in his .trade! The Mayor thought the councillors might do what they could to assist. CA Flatt suggested that .the institute might print circulars on the lines of the letter. He would be only too pleased to act as local agent if necessary. The council resolved to do all, pos- ■ sible, collectively and individually, to assist. ’ , EXHIBITION COURTThe secretary of the Auckland Provincial. Court, N.Z. and South Seas Exhibition, writing under date of December I’s, stated that the council’s auction in granting a sum of £lO 10s towards the cost of the court was highly appreciated by the executive, but it was not yet in a position to complete the court in a manner that would do credit to the premier province of the Dominion, and an appeal was made for a further contribution towards-making up the deficit of £7OO.The Mayor sa.id it was a great pity that the Auckland court should not have been up to standard. 'He thought that Paeroa had been rated highly. Crt. Brenan suggested .that the organisers might be given an order on some of the local Maori lands. In reply to Cr. Hare the Mayor said that the balance of the assessment required from the borough was £4 2s. He moved that that contribution be forwarded. Seconded by Cr. Silcock and carried . LOAN MONEYS. The Public Trust Office, Wellington, in it Letter dated December 15, advised that the sum of £5976 15s had been paid to the credit of the council’s sewerage loan account of £6OOO. The money represented the face value of 12 debentures for £5OO each, lees'cost of printing, £8 ss, and preparation fees, £l9.

On December 16 the same office ad-vised-that the council had been credits ed with £3985 on account of the street improvements loan. The amount represented the face value of 4 debentures of £lOOO each, less printing, £5, and preparation fees. £lO. The Mayor remarked that the whole matter had been satisfactorily settled.. RAILWAY WATER ACCOUNTS. The architectural branch of the Railway Department wrote advising that the board had agreed to the proposal to, pay the council direct the an- > nual. charges for water -< supplied to the houses in the railway settlement, at Paeroa. The charges would be recovered by the department from the tenants by way of increased rentA A voucher was, forwarded for the sum of £2B 2s 6d, being amount due for water charges to March 31 next. z SCHOOL SITE RESERVE. A firm of Auckland solicitors advised that arrangements had been made with the Commissioner of Crown - Lands for the vesting of the municipal reserve as a,n extension to the* school site at Paerba in the Auckland Education Board. The Undersecretary fo/ Lands suggested that the purchase money should be paid to the Receiver of Land Revenue, Auck- . Iftnd. The Commissioner of Crown Lands* also wrote bn the subject, stating that : the council would be advised when possession could be taken of the Ra-. whitiroa reserve and the conditions of lease. NGAHINA WATER SUPPLYI The Ohinemuri County Council advised that its engineer had been in-’ structed to proceed at once with the erection of the tank for the supply of water at the Ngahina wharf. Cr. Sileock said he was. under the impression that the borough had agreed to lay 'a,n inch pipe into the tank. A %-inch pipe had been put into the tank, and it was not functioning properly. The Mayor said lie would look into the matter with the engineer. NORMANBY ROAII Or. Bt’enan drew attention to the damage done in Normanby Road by the Post and Telegraph Department when putting the underground cable across to ,the new post office. Since the last r ( ain a considerable drop in the road had formed. There were large stones scattered about in the vicinity, and, generally, a very bad" crossing had been left. It was resolved to ask the department to put that portion of the road. ’ in good condition to the satisfaction of the foreman. ' DOG REGISTRATIONS. The question of fixing dog registration fees for the ensuing year, wap discussed. Cr. Silcock moved that the fees for sheep dogs be 2s 6d each, and all other dogs 7s, 6d. Cr. de Castro drew attention to the fact that without repealing the bylaw the fees for dogs, other than sheep dogs, could not be increased beyond 5s each. The Mayor intimated that the by- • law would require to be repealed, but he did not think the cost of doing so would be warranted. \ ' In answer.to Cr. de Castro the town . clerk stated that the total amount’ collected in fees last year was £29 12s, 6d. After a brief discussion the fee’s decided on for the year were sheep and cattle dogs 2s 6d. and ajl other .. dogs ss.
