SMART SHOPLIFTER.

FACE HIS FORTUNE.

MADE GOOD HAULS.

Appearances are deceptive. This axiom w*as never better illustrated than in the case of a “nice”' young man who, according to the police, has for some time past been extremely active as a shoplifter in Sydney. He went about his work most boldly, and not even the shadow of suspicion was east on him until Detective-Sergeants Keeble, Comans, and Gilbert started investigations.

The man, who, i.t is said, would get a loan frpm a, money-lender just on his, looks, stole such things as bags of golf clubs, lie.avy ornaments, and big parcels of cloth, from various leading city' stores, and was never detected until the detectives arrested him in a shop in, l Liverpool Street. His method, according to reports, was to walk into a shop, strioll round various departments until he thought the coast was clear, and then pick up an' article. It is stated that when stealing a bag of golf clubs he would simply swing them on his shoulder and casually stroll out of the place. Anybody would take him to. be just a young golfer setting out for a round on the links.

The detectives, visited a city shop, and took in charge a young man dressed in the height of fashion, and extremely well spoken. He was taken to* the Central Station, and there charged with stealing. It is likely that about nine or ten charges will be brought against the man.
