KINDNESS TO ANIMALS.

--.SHELTER AND WATER NECESSARY ’■’' STEPS TAKEN IN P AERO A. . During the summer weatncr It Is as well to remember that beasts as well as human beings feel the heat J'.-..very considerably. At the present time the Societ? for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, with the co-opera-tipn of the police, is taking active steps to. see, as far as possible, that * stock are amply protected. Particular attention is being paid to horses being ridden or driven at a fast rate, or heavily l.aden. Incredible though it s.eems, many < show no regard for the suiiei- • animals. An instance of the thoughtlessness in this direction is the cartage and delivery of pigs to the various, baton companies opeiat- ' jfrinn in the, district. Following on a ■ 'complaint Constable McOlinchy paid a. visit to the Paeroa railway yards during .this week and found a number of pig S ‘ herded together in a small yard without shelter or watci, pie- / paratory to being trucked. The com ‘ stable immediately took the matter ; ■ up with those concerned, and as, a result it is pleasing .to -report that ar- ' < rangements have since been made for the watering and hosing down of the ; pigs at regular intervals during the of.the.day.-. „ An earnest appeal is made to the ■ public to show practical, sympathy ; ■ and consideration for the dumb animails, especially during the hot weather.

The police advised this morning that a ’number of pigs on transit from various parts of the Hauraki Plains ■to the Paeroa railway, station had died yesterday, either on the journey or on arrival at yards. Constable McClinchy and a Veterinary surgeoil • from Te Aroha made an investigation into the cause of such a. large mor- . Jtality; but other than the excessive heat there was no, evidence to show that the animals, had been maliciously treated. A- warning is issued by the police, state that the transport of pigs is closely watched, and the bver.’crowding in motor lorries or other vehicles, and wilful neglect, will re-s-ult in an immediate prosecution.
