Apia reports state that the gale in Samoa on January 1 did much'damage to the plantations. Bread fruit trees are down in hundreds. Tlie steamer Lady Roberts dragged her anchors and went ashore on the inner reef.

Nelson’s launch, the Siliafai, was wrecked whilst attempting to get safe anchorage.

The seas destroyed the green light at the harbour entrance. It was set on solid concrete pillars of 20 tons, set like four feet in the roof.

The gale raged all day, switching from south-east to south-west anil back again.

Roads, were blocked by falling trees. Telephone wires are down. It is feared that the damage on the south coast is severe. There has been some loss of life.

The greatest velocity of the wind was 72 miles, an hour. The lowest reading of the barometer was 29.14.
