, GAIETY THEATRE PICTURES. TO-NIGHT. THE BORDER LEGION. Across the border the daring' deeds of The Border Legion had made their name the most feared of the lawless bands- that roamed the little civilised parts of America. To these came Jim Cleve, bitter, with no interest in life, eager to get -away from the girl who had scorned his love. And here, Where he thought to get forgetfulness, he found the. girl, living in the bandits’ camp. . . . That is the start of "The B rder Legion,’’ and how they get. away will hold you amazed and thrilled. "The Border Legion” was written by Zane Grey, and will be the chief attraction to be shown to-night. THE DRY SPELL. DECREASE IN DAIRYING RETURNS RAIN URGENTLY NEEDED. Tlie continual! dry spell of weather in tlie district is having a serious; effect on all pastures and root crops, to say nothing of gardens and lawns. Owing to the late spring, the first growth of grass was behind-hand in etsablishing its, elf, and farmers were forced to hand-feed their milch stock for some time after the season had cwnmenced. The feed in .the district had hardly got properly under way before the hot weather set in, and as a consequence the easly p growth quickly became dry and parched.
Unless a copious, rain is forthcoming at an early date there is every likelihood of'a serious shortage of feed. Already the effects of the protracted dry spell is seriously affecting the dairying industry. At tlie beginning of the season there was every indication that the previous output would be exceeded, but during the last fortnight there has been a large decrease in the 'cream returns. So far as the Paeroa butter factory ifi concerned it is understood that the amount of butter manufactured las.t week was at least one ton less than the make for the previous seven days. The majority of settlers have now completed hay-making, the corps on the whole being much-lighter than last year’s harvest. A heavy downpour would be particularly welcome at this juncture.
