GROWTH OF NEW YORK.
NEW .SCHOOLS OPENED. THIRTY-THREE IN SEPTEMBER. The growth of a city or a. district can always, be fairly accurately measured by the growth of its public schools. That being so, New York shows phenomenal growth, for when the schools resumed during the second week in September the school authorities estimated that the attendance roll would run up to over a million- Thirty-three new schools, were opened that week, making accommodation for 38,000 pupils. One year ago. the roll number was 979,462, and though the new term’s number had not been registered it was estimated that it would more than reach the seven figures for the first time in the history of the city. Of the thirtythree schools, mentioned three were high schools, equivalent in America to our secondary schools. New York has almost as many school students as the total population of New Zealand.
