At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman, in extending the compliments of the season to the councillors and their wives and families, said that the year had 1 been a busy one for all, but he thought that good work had been accomplished. In extending greetings, teethe staff Mr Johnstone paid high tribute to the loyal help given. Without wishing to make an invidious distinction he wished to specially thank Mr Evans for the splendid work and ready co-opera-tion that he had rendered during the year. The speaker paid .tribute to the knowledge held by Mr Evans of all local body matters, and saidi .that Mr Evans had been ,a tower of strength to him, especially since taking the office of chairman. Hearty felicitations were also accorded the “Hauraki Plains Gazette,” the chairman remarking that very fair and concise reports had always been published of the county’s meetings, and he wished to thank the “Gazette” for the services rendered.
Replying on behalf of the members Cr. H. M. Corbett thanked the chairman for his good wishes,, which, lie assured him, the members heartily reciprocated. Cr. Corbett said that he had attended the last council meeting of the year for a good many years, but was doubtful if he would be there at the end of 1926. He fully endorsed the remarks concerning the staff, and particualrly to the reference made to Mr Evans, who, he contended, was a loyal and efficient officer. The speaker said that during the .time he had held the office of chairman he was comparatively new to local body administration, and he would never forget th© ready assistance and kindly advice given by Mr Evans. Cr. Corbett said he was pleased to see that the Press was included in the good wishes expressed by the chairman. In his opinion it was desirable and necessary to recognise the Press, because undOubteldy it was a power in the land. The ‘Hauraki Plains Gazette” had always given loyal’ support to the council’s undertakings, and had rendered really good service in the district.
Acknowledgment of the good wishes, and eulogistic references, was made by Mr Evans and the “Gazette” representative present at the meeting.
