The break Hig-up ceremony at the Paeroa District High School on Friday afternoon was, made the knore memorable for the infant children by the gracious act of Miss M. Shaw, a former teacher, who forwarded a large, tin of lollies, for distribution among the little ones, together with her love and best wishes for a Merry Christmas.
There was a very small, yarding at the -monthly stock sale at Waitakaruru on Friday last, and practically no demand. The prices realised were low, in sympathy with those ruling elsewhere, and were not an indication of values. x
The roll, attendance at the Paeroa District High School'-for the period ending December 18 was 387 scholars in the primary school, with an average attendance for the quarter of 327 '5. The reason for the le-w average is accounted for by the mild epidemic of measles, that prevailed locally during October and November. The number of pupils in the secondary department is shown as 47, the average at* tendance for the quarter' being 42.6.
The Piako River is, now very low, and the Northern Steam Ship Co»pany’s- steamer was stuck at Kerepeehi on Friday last until the next tide.
Information has been received at the Paeroa District High School that William Parry, a pupil of .that school, has been awarded a Trentham Scholarship, valued at £25- x
Mr A. T. Vowles, Netherton, who tied for first place in the guessing of tile wegiht of the sheep at the recent show at Paeroa, has handd his share of the prize-money back to the association.

The first batch of twelve girls, sisters' of some of the 11'50 boys who came to New Zealand from London under the sheepfarmers’ scheme,- are sailing shortly. They will be taught domestic economy and the lighter branches, of land work.
The Waihi Borough Council stationed an official near the Waihi Beach yesterday, and as a result it is learned that about fifty motorists were caught not in possession of their driver’s Included in the number apprehended were .about a dozen Paeroa motorists.
A member of the Ngatea Tennis Club, Mr C. Bertelsen, received a bad cut on the leg near the knee while working at .the courts yesterday. He was endeavouring to draw a nail out of a piece of hardwood timber, and was using an axe as, a fulcrum for his claw-hammer when the pressure causr ed the axe to spring out. The blade entered his; leg, inflicting a deep cut. He was taken to the doctor at Turua and two stitches were inserted.
Speaking to the parents of the pupils of the Turua school at the bieak-ing-iip concert on Thursday evening the headmaster. Mr Moore-Jones stressed the necessity of children in dairying districts having sufficient sleep. I.t was wicked of parents to make children get up so early to assist with the milking that they fell asleep in their desks, at school.
The flow of tourists to New Zealand this year shows a falling off of approximately 100 compared with last year, according to a statement made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Tourist League last week. It was estimated that 15,000 New Zealanders going overseas took an average of £5OO with them, representing £7,500,000, while 7400 coming to New Zealand spent) about £lOO a head, representing £740,000, the annual loss ♦ Inis leinj. £6,760,000.
It has already been reported that spurious half-crowns are in circulation, bearing the date of 1916. The coins, however, are not restricted to this date, and another issjue, dated 1922, is also being freely circulated, when new the coins bear an excellent resemblance to the genuine article, and it is only when .the brightness wears off that the “home-made” character becomes obvious. The coins then, have a leady appearance.
The Sun Newspapers, Ltd., a new company, formed to acquire The Sun, flu iitchurch, and to publish another evening paper in Auckland, wajs 1 registered on Tuesday. The provisibnal directors met on Wednesday, when Mr Robert Bums was appointed chairman. It was announced that the share subscription had exceeded ffie minimum of £75,000 required by tlie prospectus, and applications to date were allotted in full. It was decided to acquire a suitable site for offices forth with and to place orders abroad for the necessary printing phint. Messrs Chilwell and Trevithick were appointed architects.- The appointment of Mr W. C. Huie as managing director was confirmed.
