The Paeroa District High School cloSes to-day for the Christmas, vacation, and will, not reopen until Monday, February 1.
At last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce it was resolved that a letter of thanks, and appreciation of the iservices rendered to the chamber by Mr H. Poland, exmember for Ohinemuri, be forwarded to him.
The Pensions Office at Paeroa has recently been removed to Hamilton, the district of which Paeroa was formerly the headquarters, having been incorporated in the Hamilton pension district. All correspondence should in future be addressed to the registrai of pensions at Hamilton. Postmasters and clerks of court will stiiflj, course, continue to assist pensioners and applicants in filling in' their forms, etc-, where necessary.
Tennis matches on the Plains tomorrow wlil be as .follows- ~‘‘A” Grade: kaihere v- . Mangawhem Kopuarahi v. Turtia, Waitakaruru v. Ngatea, at teh courts of tjie firstrrientioned teams. The only “B” grade match will be between the Turua and Kopuarahi teams at Tui’ua.

, The Karangahake Schoojl held its annual picnic at Te Aroha yesterday. About 180 pupils, parents, and friends made the trip in three special carriages, which were provided on the Waihi train. iOn arrival at Paeroa the carriages were attached to the Auckland express. The party returned to Paeroa by the last train in the evening, and the Railway Department made a special trip out to Karangahake, which was reached about 8 p.mFine weather prevailed for the excursion, and a thoroughly enjoyable day was spent at Te Aroha;.
Holiday pictures th,at will attract keen attention are contained in this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review." The centre* pages are devoted to fair bathers at popular Auckland beaches, an artijstic setting of alluriiig studies forming a specially striking jfrray. Very distinctive is the magnificent full-page photograph df the Arc de Tj’iomphe, Paris, while views, of the luxurious appointments on the Carinthia make another attractive series. Fashions, stage, film, and dance make a 'general, appeal. :
As Mrs Poland took her seat on the stage at the complimentary evening a,t the Gaiety Theatre, Paeroa, on Tuesday she was presented by little Miss Elsie May with an exquisite bouquet of sweet, peas, stocks, and asparagus- fern.
The mystery surrounding the amazing caise of "Hobartown Jack,” or Joha Gallagher, who is, well, known in Paeroa and Thames, has been cleared up The body .that was found in the harbour has now been identified as that of James. Hugh Murray.
At the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton on Tuesday F. J. Hegarty, .a master plasterer, was fined £5 and costs for dismissing apprentices without giving notice to the Labour Department. The magistrate said that he must regard the matter in a serious light. Defendant had contracted to engage the apprentices, for a certain time, and then when work was slack he turned them adrift.
Speaking at the cbmplimentarj evening tendered to Mr H. Poland, ex-M.P.’, at Paeroa on Tuesday th« Mayor (Mr W- Marshall) said that there were only five members in the House at the close of last session whose terms of office exceeded the unbroken period held by Mr Poland. The members were : the Hon. J. Hannan, the Hon. Sir H. Rhodes, Mr T. M. Wilford, who were elected on December 27, 1899 ; Mr T ,K. Sidey, elected on December 30, 1901, and Mr G. Witty, elected on December- 10, 1902.
Visitors to Ngatea- are wont to smile and make fun of two large notices that have been erected this week prohibiting the parking of motSr vehicles unattended for longer periods .than fifteen -minutes between certain two points in the township. This- has become necessary on account of the nar-’ rowness, of the roadv/ay, due to tne slipping of the banks of the roadside drains.
The Turua Brass Band will make its, first public appearance on Sunday, when a proragmme of music will be played on the old .tennis courts opposite the post office.
