DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
OF PAEROA COMMITTEE. The regular meeting of the committee of the Paeroa District High , school was held on Saturday evening last, the chairman (Mr C. H. Pascoe) presiding over the following: Messi's. W. T. Power, W. Purdie, O, T. Met.tam, A; E. Say, w. H. Blakeway, R. J. Thorp, W. L. Lawrence (secretary), and G, JI. Taylor (headmaster).. RESIGNATION. •Mr F.:t. Eaddy forwarded his.resignation from the committee consequent upon his leaving Paeroa to reside in Taranaki.—Accepted with regret. ;Mr N. C. Busby also forwarded his resignation, stating that owing to him being absent from s?aeroa. for the next two or t three months he wished \to resign rather than obstruct ‘a more member from holding office, ft was resolved that in. view of the ■-! services rendered by Mr -.Busby in the interests -and Welfare of the~ school over ’along term of years he be asked to reconsider his decision, and, if possible, to consent tor hold office until ■the end of. the present financial year. Leave of absence was granted to Mi Busby. COMMERCIAL! CLASSES. : It was decided to write, and asjc the Education Board if it intended to institute shorthand and typing and book-keeping claisses as a part of the high school: course during; the coming year. It was also decided to adTvise the board th ; at if such classes' could be -provided the committee ' -would endeavour .to arrange for suitable jpcal instructors.' Mr Power stressed the heed for 'such; Paeroa, and said that in his opinion teachers should be re- - quired to qualify in the subjects mentioned. • In answer to Mr Blakeway the headmaster said that the provision of the cl.asses as a part of the secondary . course was necessary, and he would welcome any support the committee could give in obtaining .them. INFANTS ROOM. , In reply to a request ibr structural alterations to the infants’ room, and the supply of additional furniture, the Education Board advised that the matter had referred to the .architect for a. report. MANUAL SCHOOL. The-architect to the board forwarded several:communications relative to the erection' of a fence,, bicycle and saddle sheds,: repairs to 4 the sink and "chimney, at the manual school. The - secretary asked for instructions in the matter. s ,i“ in reply tec the chairman the head- ‘ master said that the committee had '■ no control over the- internal management of the manual department. ' ■-Mr Thorp contended that the committee -should do all in its power to . assist.'the manual and technical department. Finally it was resolved to ~write',to the.eupervisor and ascertain ' .the committee’s position and liability,, in the matter. ... SECONDARY DEPARTMENT.The headmaster'drew attention to the fact that he was afraid the comi jfngpyearswould be a “lean” one in the '.secondary department of the school owing to the-fact that the upper division this year nearly equalled the .number of first year pupils, and also that the present standard 6 was a ■ very small one.. It seemed probable ■ that the roll number would drop from 60* to about 40 pupils when school re-opened-in the. new ye.aii - It 'was agreed .that parents should make a special effort to allow chil('drew to obtain a secondary counse, betaking them away from 1 school. Mr ,Say - was -authorised to sign cheques oh the school, fund account with, the secretary. ; ' PLAYING AREAS. The headmaster reported that the playing area behind the Defence Office had been cleared of -weeds.- ' The- new playing area in Wood and Nahum streets had also been cleared, and was ready for ploughingin, was resolved that, in view of the hitch that- had occurred in the department purchasing the area from .the - Paeroa Borough Council, the chairman arid secretary wait on .the toMaybr (Mr,W*: and if he considered it advisable,/authority be ' given to call tenders for .the ploughring of the: level portion oif .the area. GREETINGS. . *( Seasonable greetings were extended .. to the headmaster and his staff, and ' the ' hope was expressed that they " would spend an enjoyable holiday and ■ obtain a well-earned rest. Mr Taylor suitably acknowledged • the good wishes,-which; he said were heartily reciprocated. NEXT MEETING. It was resolved that the next meeting be held on the second Saturday in February, 1926, and that the chairman and Messrs PoyHer, Purdie, and the secretary be authorised to deal with any business in the interim. An. exchange of greetings between the chairman and members terminat- „ ed the meeting.
