WHAREPOA FERRY.
HEAVY UPKEEP EXPENSES. 'MOTION TO CLOSE SUPPORTED. At the last meeting of the Thames County Council a cheque for £271 7is was received from the Hauraki Plains County Council, being amount* due for interest on lo,ans raised by the Thames County and expended on the Plains,, less the Thames County’s half share of the maintenance of the Wharepoa ferry. The expenditure on the ferry was : 1922-23, £ll7 ss, lOd ; 1923-24, £135 6g 8d; 1924-25, £437 Is sd. The receipts were: 1922-23, £7B 18s 2d ; 1923-24, £l2 16s 8d ; 1924-25, £9 15s. The excess of expenditure over maintenance was £5BB 4tej Id. Cr. Alley said that the ferry was of no use to the people on the Thames side of the river. Cr. Brunton: The ferry should be closed to-morrow morning. * Cr. Lowe said that the Plairis County was the controlling authority and the amount would have to be paid. He had been discussing the matter with: the chairman of the Plains County Council in regard to closing - the ferry. Before closing it he would like to consult the settlers. The loss on /he working of the ferry was. nothing to the damage done to .the roads by the heavy (traffic from the Plains. He would not like to do anything without a mandate from the people. Cr. Brunton said that the ferry was of no benefit to the people, as there were too many ferries. Cr. Alley moved, and Cr.
